У тебя ж ноги-то нет"

Он, наверно, пошутил
"Мы отрежем только пальцы"
Так мне доктор говорил

Но сосед, который слева
Всё смеялся и шутил
Даже если ночью бредил
Всё про ногу говорил
Издевался, мол, не встанешь
Не увидишь, мол, жены
Поглядел бы ты, товарищ
На себя со стороны

Если б я был не калека
И слезал с кровати вниз
Я б тому, который слева
Просто горло перегрыз
Умолял сестричку Клаву
Покажи, какой я стал
Был бы жив сосед, что справа
Он бы правду мне сказал

I lived with my mother and father, dear,
On Arbat Street, life seemed so clear.
Now I'm in this hospital bed, my love,
All bandaged up, sent from above.
What's Slava to me, what's Klava's grace,
A nurse's touch in this sterile place?
The guy on my right, he's passed away,
The one on my left, he's here to stay.

And one day, as if in a drunken haze,
That neighbor, the one on the left, he says,
"Hey, listen up, buddy, just so you know,"
"You ain't got no legs down there below."
"No way, man, that ain't true, you see,"
"He must be joking with poor old me."
"We'll only take off your toes," they said,
"That's what the doctor told me in my bed."

But my neighbor, the one on the left side there,
Kept laughing and joking, without a care.
Even when he raved in the dead of night,
He talked about my legs, with all his might.
He taunted me, saying I'd never stand,
Never see my wife again, in this land.
"You should take a look, my friend," he'd tease,
"At yourself, if you please."

If I weren't a cripple, stuck in this plight,
And could climb down from this bed tonight,
I'd go to that guy on the left side's space,
And rip his throat out with violent grace.
I begged sweet nurse Klava, "Show me my state,"
"Tell me what I look like, before it's too late."
If only the guy on the right were alive,
He'd tell me the truth, I know he would strive."
