В доме смерть

В одном селе жили-были муж да жена. Жили они весело, согласно, любовно. Все
соседи им завидовали, а добрые люди, глядючи на них, радовались. Вот хозяйка
отяжелела, родила сына, да с тех родов и померла. Бедный мужик горевал да плакал,
пуще всего о ребенке убивался: как теперь выкормить, взрастить его без родной
матери? Нанял какую-то старушку за ним ходить; всяко лучше. Только что за притча?
Днем ребенок не ест, завсегда кричит, ничем его не утешишь; а наступит ночь —
словно и нет его, тихо и мирно спит.
"Отчего так? — думает старуха. — Дай-ка я ночь не посплю, авось разведаю".
Вот в самую полночь слышит она: кто-то отворил потихоньку двери и подошел к
люльке; ребенок затих, как будто грудь сосет. На другую ночь и на третью опять
то же. Стала она говорить про то мужику; он собрал своих родственников и стал
совет держать. Вот и придумали: не поспать одну ночь да подсмотреть: кто это
ходит да ребенка кормит? С вечера улеглись все на полу, в головах у себя поставили
зажженную свечу и покрыли ее глиняным горшком. В полночь отворилась в избу дверь,
кто-то подошел к люльке — и ребенок затих. В это время один из родственников
вдруг открыл свечу — смотрят: покойная мать в том самом платье, в каком ее
схоронили, стоит на коленях, наклонясь к люльке, и кормит ребенка мертвой грудью.
Только осветилась изба — она тотчас поднялась, печально взглянула на своего
малютку и тихо ушла, не говоря никому не единого слова. Все, кто ее видел,
превратились в камень; а малютку нашли мертвым.

Death in the House

In a certain village, there lived a husband and wife. They lived happily, in harmony, and with love. All
their neighbors envied them, and good people, looking at them, rejoiced. Then the wife
became pregnant and gave birth to a son, but died from those very births. The poor husband grieved and wept,
most of all he was worried about the child: how to feed him, raise him without his own
mother? He hired some old woman to look after him; it's better than nothing. But what's the story?
During the day, the child doesn't eat, always cries, you can't comfort him with anything; but when night comes —
it's as if he doesn't exist, he sleeps quietly and peacefully.
"Why is that? — the old woman thinks. — Let me stay awake one night, maybe I'll find out."
So at midnight she hears: someone quietly opened the door and approached the
cradle; the child fell silent, as if sucking on a breast. The next night and the third night, the same thing
happened again. She began to tell the husband about it; he gathered his relatives and began to
hold a council. So they came up with a plan: to stay awake one night and see: who is it
that comes and feeds the child? In the evening they all lay down on the floor, with a lit
candle at their heads, covered with a clay pot. At midnight the door to the hut opened,
someone approached the cradle — and the child fell silent. At that moment, one of the relatives
suddenly uncovered the candle — they look: the deceased mother, in the same dress in which she
was buried, is kneeling, leaning over the cradle, and feeding the child with her dead breast.
As soon as the hut was illuminated, she immediately rose, looked sadly at her
little one, and quietly left without saying a single word to anyone. Everyone who saw her
turned to stone; and the little one was found dead.
