В стародавние годы жили-были в одной деревне два молодых парня; жили они дружно,
вместе по бабам ходили, друг друга за родного брата почитали. Сделали они между
собой такой уговор: кто из них станет вперед жениться, тому звать своего товарища
на свадьбу; жив ли он будет, помрет ли — все равно. Через год после этого заболел
один молодец и помер; а спустя несколько месяцев задумал его товарищ жениться.
Собрался со всеми родственниками и поехал за невестою. Случилось им ехать мимо
кладбища; вспомнил жених своего приятеля, вспомнил старый уговор и велел
остановить лошадей.
"Я, — говорит, — пойду к своему товарищу на могилу, попрошу его к себе на свадьбу
погулять; он был мне верный друг!"
Пошел на могилу и стал звать:
"Любезный товарищ! Прошу тебя на свадьбу ко мне".
Вдруг могила растворилась, покойник встал и вымолвил:
"Спасибо тебе, брат, что исполнил свое обещание! На радостях взойди ко мне;
выпьем с тобой по стакану сладкого вина".
"Зашел бы, да поезд стоит, народ дожидается".
Покойник отвечает:
"Эх, брат, стакан ведь недолго выпить, ты ж знаешь".
Жених спустился в могилу; покойник налил ему чашу вина, он выпил — и прошло целое
сто лет.
"Пей, милый, еще чашу!"
Выпил другую — прошло двести лет.
"Ну, дружище, выпей и третью да ступай с богом, играй свою свадьбу!"
Выпил третью чашу — прошло триста лет. Покойник простился с своим товарищем;
гроб закрылся, могила заровнялась. Жених смотрит: где было кладбище, там стала
пустошь; нет ни дороги, ни сродников, ни лошадей, везде проросла крапива да
высокая трава. Побежал в деревню — и деревня уж не та; дома иные, люди все
незнакомые. Пошел к священнику — и священник не тот; рассказал ему, как и что
было. Священник начал по книгам справляться и нашел, что триста лет назад
был такой случай: в день свадьбы отправился жених на кладбище и пропал, а
невеста его вышла потом замуж за другого.

The Dead Groom

In ancient times, there lived two young men in a village; they lived amicably,
went after women together, and considered each other as brothers. They made a pact between
themselves: whoever of them would marry first, would invite his comrade to the wedding;
whether he be alive or dead - it didn't matter. A year after this, one of the young men fell ill
and died; and a few months later, his friend decided to get married.
He gathered with all his relatives and went to fetch the bride. They happened to be passing by
the cemetery; the groom remembered his friend, remembered the old pact, and ordered
the horses to be stopped.
"I," he says, "will go to my comrade's grave and ask him to come celebrate at my wedding;
he was a true friend to me!"
He went to the grave and started calling:
"Dear friend! I invite you to my wedding."
Suddenly, the grave opened up, the deceased rose and uttered:
"Thank you, brother, for fulfilling your promise! In joy, come down to me;
let's have a glass of sweet wine together."
"I would come in, but the carriage is waiting, the people are waiting."
The deceased replies:
"Oh, brother, it doesn't take long to drink a glass, you know that."
The groom descended into the grave; the deceased poured him a cup of wine, he drank it - and a whole century
passed.
"Drink, my dear, another cup!"
He drank another - two hundred years passed.
"Well, friend, drink the third one and go with God, celebrate your wedding!"
He drank the third cup - three hundred years passed. The deceased said goodbye to his friend;
the coffin closed, the grave leveled. The groom looks: where the cemetery was, there is now a wasteland;
there is no road, no relatives, no horses, only nettles and
tall grass have grown everywhere. He ran to the village - and the village is not the same; the houses are different, the people are all
unfamiliar. He went to the priest - and the priest is not the same; he told him what had happened.
The priest started looking through the books and found that three hundred years ago
there was such a case: on the day of his wedding, the groom went to the cemetery and disappeared, and
his bride later married another.
