Сидел на озере рыбак,
В лодке с удочкой дремал.
И потому не замечал,
Как на воду лег туман.
А потом увидел он,
Белый пар со всех сторон.

Мухи в воздухе висят.
Сын стоит, разинув рот,
И, в прыжке со стула, замер кот...

The Fisherman

A fisherman sat by the lake,
Dozing in his boat with a rod.
He didn't notice at all,
As a fog settled upon the water broad.
Then he saw it,
White vapor from every side.
What should I do, what should I be?
How do I know where to sail, you see?

He looked forward, then back,
And set off at random, just like that.
But his oar touched the ground below -
The shore was near, what luck did flow!
And the fisherman came home,
Pushed the door with his hand alone.
He sees his wife in the room,
Like a statue in the gloom,
And she doesn't look at him, oh doom!
Night has frozen outside the pane,
His daughter is still in her cradle's domain,
The clock above the stove does stand,
Flies hang still in the air at hand.
His son stands there, mouth agape,
And the cat, mid-leap from the chair, did drape...
