Мягким веером махнет листва

И березка - пятилетняя дочь
Не заметил как она подросла!
Посмотрю как мать откроет окно

Сколько раз к ней приводили лишь сны
И на небо, там пошире оно
Посмотрю уже с другой стороны

Свежий ветер прилетит из полей
Я с ним там, за этой стенкой дружил
Из тюремных долгих серых ночей

Он гулять меня с собой уводил
Уводил меня, на волю все звал
Через тени, что на вышках стоят

Срок скостил и по статье оправдал
Уводил да возвращался назад
Он прощался, скорой встречи желал

Но, как часто говорят, на беду
Кого ждут вернулся к тем, кто не ждал
Да только я ему назло все же жду

At which gates will the locks open for me,
And which hinges will groan with an unoiled creak?
With a light touch, they'll return my freedom,

This moment, I'll remember forever.
Night will fall on the table like a black tablecloth,
The leaves will wave like a soft fan,

And my little birch, my five-year-old daughter,
I haven't noticed how she's grown!
I'll watch as her mother opens the window,

So many times, only dreams brought me to her.
And the sky, so much wider there,
I'll look at it from a different side now.

A fresh wind will fly in from the fields,
I used to be friends with it there, beyond this wall.
From long, grey prison nights,

It would take me away for walks,
It would lead me away, calling me to freedom,
Through the shadows that stand on the watchtowers,

It shortened my sentence and acquitted me under the law,
It led me away but returned me back,
It said goodbye, wishing for a quick reunion.

But, as they often say, unfortunately,
He who is awaited returns to those who didn't wait.
But I, in defiance of him, still wait.
