O You Who Claims Understanding
O you who claim understanding,
How long will you dwell in illusion?
You fill your days with sin and blame,
And err with grave mistakes.
Has your fault not become clear to you?
Has your gray hair not warned you?
There is no doubt in its advice,
And your hearing has not become deaf.
Has death not called out to you?
Has the voice not reached your ears?
Do you not fear what you might miss?
So you take precaution and care.
How often you wander in heedlessness,
And strut with pride,
And devote yourself to amusement,
As if death has not touched all.
And until when will you turn away?
And delay your repentance?
The traits that have gathered within you,
Are flaws whose entirety has joined.
If you anger your Lord, you do not worry about that,
And if your efforts fail,
You suffer from worry.
And if you see the inscription,
Of gold, you rejoice,
And if the coffin passes you by,
You become gloomy, yet without true grief.
You disobey the righteous advisor,
And resist and turn away,
And follow those who deceive,
And those who prevent and those who slumber.
You strive in the desires of the self,
And seek after bankruptcy,
And forget the darkness of the grave,
And do not remember what is there.
If fortune had favored you,
Your gaze would not have fallen upon you,
And you would not, when the sermon clears sorrows, become gloomy.
You will shed blood, not tears,
When you witness, not a gathering,
That protects in the gathering place,
Neither maternal uncle nor paternal uncle.
As if I see you descending,
To the grave and being covered,
And your companions have surrendered you,
To a place tighter than a well.
There the body is stretched out,
For the worms to consume it,
Until the wood is eaten away,
And the bone becomes dust.
And after that, there is no escape,
From the presentation when it is established.
A path whose bridge is stretched,
Over the fire for those who have sinned.
How many a guide has gone astray,
And one of honor has been humiliated,
And how many a scholar has slipped,
And said, "The matter is settled."
So hasten, O submerged one,
To what sweetens the bitterness,
For life has almost ended,
And you have not stopped blaming.
And do not rely on time,
Even if it is gentle and pleasing,
For you will be like one who is deceived,
By a serpent that breathes poison.
And lower your gaze, for death will meet you,
And it is swift in your gaze, and it does not hesitate if it intends.
And avoid arrogance ... if diligence assists you,
And restrain your words if they flow ... for how happy is the one who restrains.
And confide in your brother ... and believe him when he speaks,
And abandon the worn-out work ... for the one who abandons has succeeded.
And advise the one whose feathers have fallen ... with what is general and what is specific,
And do not grieve over the deficiency ... and do not be eager for the gathering.
And abandon the vile character ... and accustom your hand to giving,
And do not listen to the reproach ... and purify it from blame.
And increase your good deeds ... and leave what follows harm,
And prepare the ship of journey ... and fear the depths of the sea.
With this I advise you, my friend ... and I have spoken like one who has revealed,
So blessed is the young man who has gone ... with my manners he follows.
