Two Red Stars (Futari No Akaboshi)

The city at dawn, so quiet now,
yet it will all begin again.
It will all start anew.
Over the sleeping landfill by the sea, and the chemical plant's
smokestacks, one, two stars
are swallowed up.
So many city fireflies lined up,
losing to the dawning day,
fade from view.
You and I, too, will part ways.

Over that highway bridge,
I'll race, taking you with me.
Shall we, just the two of us,
run far away from here?
With the waning moon almost gone,
and the clouds obscuring it just so,
shall I carry away our two red stars,
far, far away?

Across the bridge's joints, the radio waves reaching us two
carry that nostalgic
melody.
Can you hear it? Like a whisper,
seeping into your disheveled hair.
Far, far away.
Looking out, I wish the line of blue traffic lights
could illuminate our feelings.
Where will we be tomorrow?
Again today, the city gets dirtier,
spewing corrosive smoke.
Shall I take you to a distant place,
a place you don't know?
A single, unblinking star
disappears into the dawning city.
Shall we, just the two of us, from here,
search for an aimless tomorrow?

before they're lost to the city's noise,
the morning mist
colors the neighboring sky.
