Zen Temple's Bell Tolling
With the clouds chilly and rain cold
In the middle of the night with a desolate scene so solitary and bleak
The desolate mountains are silently still
Vaguely and faintly, the midnight bell tolls
The bell's sound wakes me from my dream, making it hard to fall asleep again
Who has caused me to carry my sadness without being able to tell it to anyone?
My sorrow is unbearable
Love is as transient as bubbles
The dream of mandarin ducks
三生约
A promise for three lifetimes
How can I manage to pursue this?
My past love suddenly came to an end
Heartbroken, I grieve that I betrayed love, bearing a grudge, determined to escape love
In the Zen temple, night after night, I sigh over my solitary shadow
It resembles the cuckoo's mournful cries, weeping blood and wailing at midnight
Living in seclusion in the deep ravines and remote mountain ridges
Bodhi keeps me company as I painstakingly recite sutras
The mundane world and its conventions are unbearable to hear again
Love is as light as smoke
I cultivate my Zen heart and Buddhist nature
My dream has already awakened this morning
Roots of love, affection, resentment, and grudges
I fear they will evoke spring flowers
Threads of love, affection, sorrow, and resentment
I fear they will linger like the autumn moon
My loving heart has long since turned to ashes
My Zen heart is pure and clean
Love, affection, and grudges are like illnesses
Facing flowers and the moon, I ponder the future
But in vain, I reminisce
花月证
Flowers and the moon bear witness
My lover betrayed me
Changing hearts and breaking promises is truly unforgivable
I was wrong to give you my heart when we first met
Zen temple's bell tolls
Listening alone in the dead of night
In the middle of the night, the resentful person is already filled with tears
Love, affection, and grudges are like illnesses
Facing flowers and the moon, I ponder the future
But in vain, I reminisce
花月证
Flowers and the moon bear witness
My lover betrayed me
Changing hearts and breaking promises is truly unforgivable
I was wrong to give you my heart when we first met
Zen temple's bell tolls
Listening alone in the dead of night
In the middle of the night, the resentful person is already filled with tears
