Un buen día decidiste

Sacaste un blanco pañuelo
Que iluminó nuestra patria,
Fue en la Alameda, recuerdo.

Entregaste a la mujer,
Al niño, al trabajador,
Un ancho y largo camino
Por un mañana mejor.

Pero ya desde las sombras
Se ocultaba el asesino:
Te querían de rodillas
Y no con el talle erguido.

El once muy de mañana
Sabiendo lo que pasaba
Fuiste el primero en la lucha

Comrade President

One day you decided
To walk alongside your people,
Getting to know them and respecting them,
And representing them in their entirety.

In the many years of struggle,
Of consequence and sleeplessness,
You covered, span by span,
From Arica to the Strait of Magellan.

They always tried to break you
With calumnies and outrages,
And you marched on steadfastly
Alongside the people.

In the year precisely seventy
You pulled out a white handkerchief
That illuminated our homeland,
In the Alameda as I recall.

You gave to women,
To children, to workers,
A wide and long path
For a better tomorrow.

But already from the shadows
The assassin was lurking:
They wanted you on your knees
And not with your stature erect.

Very early on the eleventh
Knowing what was happening,
You were the first in the fight
With heart and bullet.

Let me write you a poem,
My beloved Salvador,
Let me shout your name
From Cuzco to Bangkok.

History does not stop
Neither with repression nor death;
These are your last words,
