On an Autumn Evening

On an autumn evening
when it gets a little chilly
and the smell of guavas
floats in the air,
I stand
at the edge of the bed
wrapped in a warm blanket
and long for - I don't know what.
I gaze out the street from the blind
through the stripes,
a torn newspaper, wind in the trees,
light in the neighborhood club windows,
an accordion out of tune playing an old melody,
there is a bike on the fence,
in the second apartment they're flushing the water,
a lone butterfly around the streetlight,
someone leaves,
someone enters,
the smell of earth, a creaking door,
the tapping of a woman's heels grows distant,
a night bird suddenly cries out
and that man, Max,
sits on the balcony and reads the paper.
