Das erste, was ich sehe, als ich aus dem Bahnhof trete,
Auf den großen Platz davor, ist keine Frau.
Stattdessen fällt mein Blick direkt auf einen wunderschönen,
Großen und auch äußerst luxuriösen Bau.
Er wirkt auf mich wie ein Palast, nein, wie ein Tempel einer
Längst vergess'nen Gottheit, wie er da so steht.
Ich seh mich selbst als Automaten, der wie ferngesteuert
Ganz mechanisch auf ein Heiligtum zugeht.

Ein Wagenmeister steht am Eingang, der mit wohlgeübter Geste
Pagen mit Gepäck ins Innere schickt.
Die Menschen um mich nehme ich nun kaum noch wahr,
Ich bin von dieser Szenerie verzaubert und entzückt.
Chauffeure halten Türen auf an den Automobilen,
Gäste reisen an und andere Gäste ab.
Die fein herausgeputzten Damen steigen ein und aus,
Und noble Herren nicken freundlich, aber knapp.

Ich fühl mich wie ein Gläubiger, der beim Betrachten
Eines Doms beseelt auf seinen Knien dem Schöpfer dankt.
Ich hör mich selbst den Namen kosten, der geschmackvoll
Und in großen Lettern über mir am Eingang prankt.
In meiner Brust, da wächst ein tiefes Sehnen,
Und schlagartig wird mir klar: An diesen Ort gehör ich hin.
Ich finde einen Weg, ich will und muss hinein.
Ich weiß, sonst hat mein ganzes Leben nie mehr einen Sinn.

Ich spüre ganz genau, heut ist mein Glückstag,
Und mit mir wird etwas Großes und Besonderes passieren.
Ich prüfe, wie mein Anzug sitzt, und gehe um den Block
Herum, es muss ein zweiter Eingang existieren.
Da ist die Tür, hier strömen die Bediensteten und
Lieferanten ständig wie Insekten ein und aus.
Die Schwelle lädt mich ein, und so betrete ich
Zum allerersten Mal das große, wunderbare Haus.

Ich fühle mich nicht mal eine Sekunde lang als Eindringling,
Was mich in meinem Wissen nur bestärkt.
Ich bin da angekommen, wo ich hingehör.
Ich bleib in dem geschäftigen Betrieb fast unbemerkt.
Es werde händeringend ein Ersatz gesucht, die Stelle
Eines Hausmeisters ist erst seit kurzem frei.
Der Vorgänger, so sagt man mir, sei unglücklich gefallen,
Und er brach sich leider das Genick dabei.

Nur wenige Gespräche und ganz viele Flunkereien später
Bin ich im Hotel fest angestellt.
Auf Probe nur, fürs erste, dennoch fühle ich mich
Wie der größte Glückspilz auf der ganzen weiten Welt.
Ich denke, welch ein wundervoller Zufall,
Laut bemerke ich jedoch: "Welch ein bedauernswerter Tropf!"
Ich arbeite ab jetzt im Paradies und hab zum ersten Mal
Seit langem auch ein Dach über dem Kopf.

Vergessen ist die Somme, vergessen ist Versailles,
Vergessen ist die Not, das alles liegt weit hinter mir.
Ab morgen bin ich ein ganz neuer Mensch, hab Perspektiven,
Und ich wünsche mir, ich blieb für immer hier.

Nuances: Building Structure

The first thing I see as I step out of the station,

I feel like a believer who, while contemplating
A cathedral, devoutly thanks the Creator on his knees.
I hear myself savoring the name, which tastefully
And in large letters above me at the entrance flaunts.
In my chest, a deep longing grows,
And suddenly it becomes clear to me: I belong in this place.
I will find a way, I want and must get inside.
I know, otherwise my whole life will never have any meaning again.

I feel very clearly, today is my lucky day,
And something big and special will happen to me.
I check how my suit fits, and walk around the block
There must be a second entrance.
There is the door, here the employees and
Suppliers constantly stream in and out like insects.
The threshold invites me, and so I enter
For the very first time the large, wonderful house.

I don't feel like an intruder for even a second,
Which only reinforces my knowledge.
I have arrived where I belong.
I remain almost unnoticed in the busy operation.
A replacement is desperately sought, the position
Of a caretaker has only recently become vacant.
The predecessor, so they tell me, fell unfortunately,
And sadly broke his neck in the process.

Just a few conversations and a lot of fibs later
I am permanently employed at the hotel.
On probation only, for now, yet I feel
Like the biggest lucky charm in the whole wide world.
I think, what a wonderful coincidence,
However, I remark aloud: "What a pitiful fellow!"
I work in paradise from now on and have for the first time
In a long time also a roof over my head.

Forgotten is the Somme, forgotten is Versailles,
Forgotten is the hardship, all that lies far behind me.
From tomorrow on, I am a completely new person, I have prospects,
And I wish I could stay here forever.
