This one means the most to me
I, uh, I wrote it about my granddaddies
I've had a Paw Paw, a graddaddy
And then, I grew up next-door to an old man that I call John Pop

And then, when I went off to college
Across the street from where we lived
I met this old man named Mr. Pete
And when we'd go out on the road honky-tonkin'
My dog Haggard, yes, I have a dog named Haggard
He would get out of the yard and Mr. Pete would always
Get him and put him in his backyard 'til we got back on Sunday

And I got to know Mr. Pete real well
And he was so much like my granddaddies
Which was so neat because all my granddaddies had already passed away
And there was always just a big hole in my heart
I wasn't ready to give them up yet

So having Mr. Pete was a pretty neat thing
We drank a lot of coffee, and we talked about
Women and fishin' and golf, baseball, politics
Stuff like that

But the thing I admire most about all those old men
And Mr. Pete passed away the day before my first son was born
The thing that I hold dear to me now that they've gone
Is their strong faith in God
I bet they're up there watchin' us right here in Waco, Texas

Je, euh, je l'ai écrite pour mes grands-pères
J'ai eu un Paw Paw, un grand-père

Et puis, quand je suis allé au collège
En face de chez nous

Et quand on allait en tournée dans les honky-tonks
Mon chien Haggard, oui, j'ai un chien qui s'appelle Haggard
Il sortait de la cour et Mr. Pete l'attrapait toujours
Le mettait dans sa cour jusqu'à notre retour le dimanche

Et j'ai fini par bien connaître Mr. Pete
Et il ressemblait tellement à mes grands-pères
Ce qui était vraiment cool car tous mes grands-pères étaient déjà décédés
Et il y avait toujours un grand vide dans mon cœur
Je n'étais pas prêt à les laisser partir

Alors avoir Mr. Pete était une chose assez chouette
On buvait beaucoup de café, et on parlait de
Femmes, pêche, golf, baseball, politique
Des trucs comme ça

Mais la chose que j'admire le plus chez tous ces vieux
Et Mr. Pete est décédé la veille de la naissance de mon premier fils
La chose que je chéris maintenant qu'ils sont partis
C'est leur foi inébranlable en Dieu
Je parie qu'ils sont là-haut, en train de nous regarder ici à Waco, Texas
