"Ahoi, Klaas Nielsen und Peter Jehann!
Kiekt nach ob wi noch nich to Mus sind!
Ji hewt doch gesehn den Klabautermann?
Gottlob, dat wi wedder to Huus sind!"
Die Fischer riefen′s und stießen ans Land
Und zogen die Kiele bis hoch auf den Strand
Dumpf an, rollten die Fluten
Han Jochen aber, rechnete nach
Und schüttelte finster sein Haupt und sprach:
"Een Boot is noch buten!
Een Boot is noch buten!"

Und ernster keuchte die braune Schar
Dem Dorf zu über die Dünen
Schon grüßten von Fern mit zerwehtem Haar
Die Frau'n an den Gräbern der Hünen
Und "Korl" hieß es und "Leiv Marie!
Tis doch ma schön dat ju wedder hie!"
Dumpf an, rollten die Fluten
"Un Hinrich, mien Hinrich, wo is denn dee?"
Und Jochen wies in die brüllende See:
"Een Boot is noch buten!
Een Boot is noch buten!"

Am Ufer dräute der Möwenstein
Drauf stand ein verrufenes Gemäuer
Dort schleppten sie Werk und Strandholz hinein
Und gossen Öl in das Feuer
Das leuchtete weit in die Nacht hinaus
Und sollte rufen: "O komm nach Haus!"
Dumpf an rollten die Fluten
Hier steht dein Weib in Nacht und Wind
Jammert laut auf und küsst dein Kind:
"Een Boot is noch buten!
Een Boot is noch buten!"

Doch die Nacht verrann und die See ward still
Und die Sonne schien in die Flammen,
Da schluchzte die Ärmste: "As Gott will!"
Und bewusstlos brach sie zusammen!
Sie trugen sie heim auf schmalem Brett
Dort liegt sie nun fiebernd im Krankenbett
Und draußen plätschern die Fluten
Dort spielt ihr Kind, "ihr lütting Jehann"
Und lallt wie träumend dann und wann:
"Een Boot is noch buten!
Een Boot is noch buten!"

A Ship Is Still Outside

"Ahoy, Klaas Nielsen and Peter Jehann!
See if we're not yet ashore!
You surely saw the water sprite?
Thank God that we are home again!"
The fishermen shouted and pushed ashore
And pulled the ships up high onto the beach
The waves rolled in muffled
But Han Jochen made his calculations
And shook his head darkly and said:
"A ship is still outside!
A ship is still outside!"

And more gravely panted the brown crowd
Across the dunes towards the village
Already, with windblown hair, greeted them from afar
The women at the giants' graves
And "Korl" it was called and "Leiv Marie!
It's good that you're back here after all!"
The waves rolled in muffled
"And Hinrich, my Hinrich, where is he?"
And Jochen pointed to the roaring sea:
"A ship is still outside!
A ship is still outside!"

On the shore loomed the seagull rock
On it stood an infamous ruin
There they dragged tools and driftwood in
And poured oil into the fire
That lit up far into the night
And was meant to call out: "Oh come home!"
The waves rolled in muffled
Here stands your wife in the night and wind
Wailing aloud and kissing your child:
"A ship is still outside!
A ship is still outside!"

But the night passed and the sea grew still
And the sun shone into the flames,
Then the poor woman sobbed: "As God wills!"
And collapsed unconscious!
They carried her home on a narrow board
There she now lies feverish in the sickbed
And outside the waves splash
There your child plays, "your little Jehann"
And stammers as if dreaming from time to time:
"A ship is still outside!
A ship is still outside!"
