كم تشتكي وتقول إنك معدم
والأرض ملكك والسماء والأنجم
ولك الحقول وزهرها واريجها
ونسيمها والبلبل المترنم
والماءحولك فضه رقراقة
والشمس فوقك عسجد يتضرم
والنور يبني في السفوح وفي الذرى
دورا مزخرفة وحين يهدم
هشت لك الدنيا فمالك واجما
وتبسمت فعلاما لا تتبسم
إن كنت مكتئبا لعز قد مضا
هيهات يرجعه إليك تندم
أو كنت تشفق من حلول مصيبه
هيهات يمنع أن تحل توجب
او كنت جاوزت الشباب فلا تقل
شاخ الزمان فإنه لا يهرم
أنظر فما زالت تطل من الثرى
صور تكاد من حسنها تتكلم

How Much Do You Complain

How much do you complain, saying that you are poor?
The earth is yours, and the sky and the stars,
The fields are yours, and their flowers and fragrance,
And the breeze, and the singing nightingale.
The water around you is shimmering silver,
And the sun above you is amber burning brightly,
The light builds on the slopes and on the peaks,
A gilded circle, and when it falls,
The world laughs for you. Why are you so sad?
She has smiled at you. Why don't you smile?
If you are depressed because of a glory that has passed,
It has fled, and you will never get it back. Regret it.
Or if you fear that a misfortune will come,
Be assured that it will not come unless it is destined.
Or if you have passed your youth, do not say
Time has grown old, for it will never grow old.
