Не знаю, мой дорогой Шарах, как сложилась бы судьба народа убыхов
Если бы не эта Крымская война
Когда во время войны русская армия отступила с Абхазского и нашего побережья
Великий визирь Амар Паша высадился с войсками в Сухуми
В наших селениях появились молвы, пришедшие через горы из Дагестана
И приплывшие вместе с турками

И все они в один голос говорили, что русский разбит и больше никогда не покажется в наших местах
"А мы пришли к вам навсегда" — говорили они
"Чтобы водрузить на вершинах ваших гор священное знамя великого султана
Наместника Аллаха на Земле"
Вот тогда-то и качнулся наш Хаджи Керантух от царя к султану
Сорвал с черкесски погоны и перестал брать серебряные рубли

В войне царя с султаном владетельный князь Абхазии Чумудби Чачба остался, как и был, на стороне царя
А наш Хаджи Керантух стал на сторону султана
В это же время он и сделался нашим предводителем
И уже не качнулся обратно, когда турки вскоре после этого стали сажать своих солдат на корабли
Один за другим отплывавшие обратно в Турцию

Генералы царя начали возвращаться и одно за другим занимать уставленные ими укрепления
И тут Хаджи Керантух проявил твёрдость и храбрость, которую многие из нас от него и не ожидали
Турки ушли, а он продолжал воевать с генералами царя
Военные пароходы царя высаживали солдат то около Туапсе, то около Адлера, то в устье реки Сочи
Они не спешили наступать вглубь страны убыхов
Только строили или восстанавливали свои крепости там, где высаживались
Но все хорошо понимали, что они на этом не остановятся

Хорошо понимал это и наш предводитель Хаджи Керантух
Он всюду, где мог, мешал высаживаться на берег солдатам царя
И спешил нападать на их укрепления, пока они ещё не были достроены
Мы гордились собственной стойкостью, но по правде говоря, дорогой Шарах
Наш народ к тому времени был уже изнурён войной
Всё чаще из-за неё люди не успевали встречаться даже на похоронах и свадьбах
Не успевали тохать то, что ими было посеяно
И не успевали собирать урожай из того, что успели протохать

Боже мой, сколько времени прошло с тех пор, и сколько раз всё менялось в этом непостоянном мире
Жизнь часто сравнивают с морем, и это правильное сравнение
Потому что, как в жизни, безжалостные волны сокрушают и хоронят на своём пути всё живое
А иногда, словно удовлетворяясь первой лёгкой добычей, быстро отступают назад
Но там, где они прокатились туда и обратно, жизнь всё равно исчезает
Как остатки воды, высыхающей среди раскалённых цветов
Я всегда вспоминаю это, когда думаю о том, что случилось с нами, убыхами
И дай бог, если я сумею рассказать тебе всё по порядку, одно за другим

Verse 1

I don't know, my dear Sharakh, what the fate of the Ubykh people would have been
if it weren't for that Crimean War.
When, during the war, the Russian army retreated from the Abkhazian and our coast,
the Grand Vizier Omar Pasha landed with troops in Sukhumi.
Rumors, coming through the mountains from Dagestan,
and arriving with the Turks, appeared in our villages.

And all of them, with one voice, said that the Russian was defeated and would never again appear in our lands.
"And we have come to you forever," they said,
"to plant the sacred banner of the great Sultan,
the Viceroy of Allah on Earth, on the peaks of your mountains."
It was then that our Hadji Kerantukh swayed from the Tsar to the Sultan.
He tore the epaulettes from his Cherkeska and stopped taking silver rubles.

In the war between the Tsar and the Sultan, the ruling prince of Abkhazia, Chumudbi Chachba, remained, as he was, on the side of the Tsar.
And our Hadji Kerantukh sided with the Sultan.
At the same time, he became our leader.
And he didn't sway back when, shortly after this, the Turks began putting their soldiers on ships,
one after another sailing back to Turkey.

The Tsar's generals began to return and, one by one, occupy the fortifications they had built.
And here Hadji Kerantukh showed the firmness and courage that many of us did not expect from him.
The Turks left, but he continued to fight the Tsar's generals.
The Tsar's warships landed soldiers near Tuapse, then near Adler, then at the mouth of the Sochi River.
They were in no hurry to advance deep into the land of the Ubykhs.
They only built or restored their fortresses where they landed.
But everyone understood perfectly well that they would not stop there.

Our leader, Hadji Kerantukh, understood this well too.
Wherever he could, he interfered with the Tsar's soldiers landing ashore.
And he hastened to attack their fortifications while they were still unfinished.
We were proud of our own resilience, but truthfully, dear Sharakh,
our people were already exhausted by the war by that time.
Increasingly, because of it, people didn't even have time to meet at funerals and weddings.
They didn't have time to cultivate what they had sown.
And they didn't have time to harvest what they managed to cultivate.

My God, how much time has passed since then, and how many times everything has changed in this fickle world.
Life is often compared to the sea, and it's a fitting comparison.
Because, as in life, merciless waves crush and bury everything living in their path.
And sometimes, as if satisfied with the first easy prey, they quickly retreat.
But where they have rolled back and forth, life still disappears,
like the remnants of water drying up among scorching flowers.
I always remember this when I think about what happened to us, the Ubykhs.
And God grant that I will be able to tell you everything in order, one after another.
