Das Haus ist achtundneunzig Jahre alt.
Von der Fassade bröckelt immer mehr der Putz.
Der Hof nach hinten, der ist grau und kalt
Und in der Ecke für den Müll staut sich der Schmutz.
Und doch, was nützen die Gedanken schon,
Auch wenn das meterhohe Fenster nicht mehr schließt,
Und wenn man nachts bei jedem kleinen Ton
Fast aus dem Bett fällt, weil der Nachbar einmal niest
Im sechsten Stock, hab' ich mein Zimmer
Im sechsten Stock, ist mein Zuhause.

Das Glück, das hier bei mir in Pflege war
Das ist der Grund, der mich in diesen Mauern hält
Es liegt Erinnerung auf dem Inventar
Ein bißchen Kitsch in meiner engen, kleinen Welt
Das Haus ist achtundneunzig Jahre alt.
Bestimmt hat es einmal ein reicher Mann gebaut
Die Zeit macht auch nicht vor den Reichen halt
Was heut verstummt ist, das war gestern einmal laut

On the Sixth Floor

On the sixth floor, I have my room
On the sixth floor, is my home.
For my own solace, I often tell myself:
If it doesn't suit you, why don't you move out
The house is ninety-eight years old.
More and more of the plaster on the facade crumbles away.
The courtyard out back is gray and cold
And dirt piles up in the corner for trash.
And yet, what good are these thoughts,
Even though the tall window no longer closes,
And when every little sound at night
Almost makes you fall out of bed because your neighbor sneezes once
On the sixth floor, I have my room
On the sixth floor, is my home.

The happiness that was nursed here by me
Is the reason that keeps me in these walls
Memories linger on the furnishings
A bit of tackiness in my small, cramped world
The house is ninety-eight years old.
I'm sure a wealthy man built it once
Time does not pause for the rich either
What is silent today, once roared with life
