E Viemos Nascidos do Mar

E muito se espantam da nossa brancura entretanto,
E muito pasmavam de olhar olhos claros assim,
Palpavam as mãos e os braços e outras partes, portanto,
Esfregavam de cuspo minha pele para ver se era enfim,
Uma tinta ou se era de estampa uma carne tão branca,
Vendo assim que era branco o meu corpo e a brancura de então,
Extasiam e muito se pasmam de tudo em admiração;

E eram os brancos da sombra nascidos do mar pelas naus,
Guiados pelos ventos do céu e pelo voo das aves;

Eles escondem as suas vergonhas cobertas de estopas,
E eram grandes e gordos e baços e enxutos, os pretos,
Pelas ventosidades confundem traseiros e bocas,
E tapam estes e estas cobram calafetos,
E os mais pardos lá vão quase nús, vão ao léu, gabirus,
E de tetas até à cintura há mulheres crepitantes,
Tão desnudas meneiam na dança o seu corpo dançante;

E eram os brancos da sombra nascidos do mar pelas naus,

And We Came Sailing from the Sea

And many are amazed at our whiteness, meanwhile,
And much were amazed to look at light eyes like that,
They felt my hands and arms and other parts, therefore,
They rubbed my skin with spit to see if it was finally,
An ink or if it was a stamp, a flesh so white,
Seeing that my body was white and the whiteness of then,
They were ecstatic and much amazed at everything in admiration;

And the whites of the shadow were born from the sea by ships,
Guided by the winds of heaven and by the flight of birds;

They hide their shame covered with burlap,
And they were big and fat and pale and lean, the blacks,
By the winds they confuse buttocks and mouths,
And cover these and those with calafetes,
And the more tan ones go almost naked, they go at leisure, gabirus,
And from the breasts to the waist there are crackling women,
So naked they sway their dancing bodies in the dance;

And the whites of the shadow were born from the sea by ships,
