On doit chanter ce que l'on aime
Exalter tout ce qui est beau
C'est pour cela qu'en un poème
Je vais chanter les haricots

Alors que tout repose encore
Dès le premier cocorico
A qu'il est doux quant vient l'aurore
De voir semer les haricots
Et puis un jour sortant de terre
Et se dressant toujours plus haut
Vers le soleil, vers la lumière
On voit pousser les haricots

Au printemps la rose est éclose

En été, le coquelicot
Mais quel spectacle grandiose
De voir fleurir les haricots

Plus tard les paysans de France
S'agenouillant, courbant le dos
Ont l'air de faire révérence
Pour mieux cueillir les haricots
Mais ces courbettes hypocrites
Précèdent la main du bourreau
Qui les jetant dans la marmite
Met à bouillir les haricots
Et lorsque vient leur dernière heure
Ont les sert autour d'un gigot
Et chaque fois mon âme pleure
Car c'est la fin des haricots

The Beans

We should sing of what we love
Exalt all that is beautiful
It is for this that in a poem
I will sing of beans

While all is still at rest
At the first cock-a-doodle-doo
How sweet it is when dawn comes
To see the beans being sown
And then one day emerging from the earth
And standing ever taller
Towards the sun, towards the light
We see the beans growing

In spring the rose blossoms

In summer, the poppy
But what a grand spectacle
To see the beans in flower

Later the peasants of France
Kneeling, bending their backs
Seem to be bowing
To better pick the beans
But those hypocritical bows
Precede the executioner's hand
Who, throwing them into the pot
Sets the beans to boiling
And when their final hour comes
They are served around a leg of lamb
And each time my soul weeps
For it is the end of the beans
