What It Was, Was Football

It was back last October, I believe it was.
We was going to hold a tent service off at this college town, and we got there about dinner time on Saturday.
Different ones of us thought that we ought to get us amouthful to eat before we set up the tent.
So we got off the truck and followed this little bunch of peoplethrough this small little bitty patch of woods there,
And we came up on a big sign that says,
"Get something to Eat Here."
I went up and got me two hot dogs and a big orange drink,
And before I could take a mouthful of that food,
This whole raft of people come up around me and got meto where I couldn't eat nothing,
Up like, and I dropped my big orange drink.
Well, friends, they commenced to move, and there wasn't so much that I could do but move with them.
Well, we commenced to go throught all kinds of doors and gates and I don't know what- all,
And I looked up over one of 'em and it says, "North Gate."
We kept on a-going through there, and pretty soon wecome up on a young boy and he says,
"Ticket, please."
And I says, "Friend, I don't have a ticket; I don't even know where it is that I'm a-going!"
Well, he says, "Come on out as quick as you can."
And I says, "i'll do 'er; i'll turn right around the first chance I get."
Well, we kept on a-moving through there, and pretty soon everybody got where it was that they was a-going,
Because they parted and I could see pretty good.
And what I seen was this whole raft of people a-sittin' on these two banksand a-lookin
At one another across this pretty little green cow pasture.
Somebody had took and drawed white lines all over it anddrove posts in it,
And I don't know what all,
And I looked down there and I seen five or six convicts arunning up and downand a-blowing whistles.
And then I looked down there and I seen these pretty girlswearin' these little bitty short dressesand a-dancing around,
And so I thought I'd sit down and see what it was that was a-going to happen.
About the time I got set down good I looked down there and
I seen thirty or forty men come a-runnin' out of one end of a great big out house down there and everybody
Where I was a-settin' got up and hollered!
And I asked this fella that was a sittin' beside of me,
"Friend, what is it that they're a-hollerin' for?"
Well, he whopped me on the back and he says,
"Buddy, have a drink!" I says,"Well, I believe I will have another big orange."
I got it and set back down.
When I got there again I seen that the men had got in two little bitty bunches down there real close together, and they voted.
They elected one man apiece, and them two men come out in the middle of that cow pastureand shook hands
Like they hadn't seen one another in a long time.
Then a convict came over to where they was a-standin',
And he took out a quarter and they commenced to oddman right there!
After a while I seen what it was they was odd-manning for
It was that both bunchesfull of them wanted this funnylookin little pumpkin to play with.
And I know, friends, that they couldn't eat it
Because they kicked it the whole evenin'and it never busted.
Both bunchesful wanted that thing.
One bunch got it and it made the other bunch just as madas they could be!
Friends, I seen that evenin' the awfulest fight that I everhave seen in all my life!
They would run at one -another and kick one- another and throw one another down
And stomp on one another and grind their feet in one another and
I don't know what-all and just as fast as one of 'em would get hurt,
They'd take him off and run another one on!
Well, they done that as long as I set there,
But pretty soon this boy that had said "Ticket, please."
He come up to me and said,
"Friend, you're gonna have to leave because it is that you don't have a ticket."
And I says, "Well, all right."
And I got up and left.
I don't know friends, to this day, what it was that they was a doin' down there, but I have studied about it.
I think it was that it's some kindly of a contest where they see
Which bunchful of them men can take that pumpkin and run from one end of that cow pasture
To the other without gettin' knocked down or steppin' in somethin'.

Es war letzten Oktober, glaube ich.
Wir wollten einen Zeltgottesdienst in dieser Universitätsstadt abhalten, und wir kamen dort am Samstag zur Abendessenszeit an.
Einige von uns dachten, wir sollten uns einen Bissen zu essen holen, bevor wir das Zelt aufbauen.
Also stiegen wir vom Lastwagen und folgten dieser kleinen Gruppe von Leuten durch dieses kleine, winzige Wäldchen dort,
Und wir stießen auf ein großes Schild, auf dem stand:
"Hier gibt's was zu essen."
Ich ging hin und holte mir zwei Hotdogs und ein großes Orangengetränk,
Und bevor ich einen Bissen von dem Essen nehmen konnte,
Kam diese ganze Schar von Leuten um mich herum und drängte mich so, dass ich nichts essen konnte,
So ungefähr, und ich ließ mein großes Orangengetränk fallen.
Nun, Freunde, sie fingen an, sich zu bewegen, und ich konnte nicht viel anderes tun, als mich mit ihnen zu bewegen.
Nun, wir fingen an, durch alle möglichen Türen und Tore zu gehen, und ich weiß nicht was noch alles,
Und ich schaute über eines davon hoch und da stand: „Nordtor.“
Wir gingen immer weiter da durch, und ziemlich bald trafen wir auf einen jungen Burschen, und er sagte:
"Ticket, bitte."
Und ich sagte: „Freund, ich habe kein Ticket; ich weiß nicht einmal, wohin ich gehe!“
Nun, er sagte: „Kommen Sie so schnell wie möglich wieder raus.“
Und ich sagte: „Mach ich; ich drehe bei der ersten Gelegenheit gleich um.“
Nun, wir bewegten uns weiter da durch, und ziemlich bald kam jeder dort an, wohin er wollte,
Denn sie teilten sich, und ich konnte ziemlich gut sehen.
Und was ich sah, war diese ganze Schar von Leuten, die auf diesen beiden Hängen saßen und schauten
Sich gegenseitig über diese hübsche kleine grüne Kuhweide an.
Jemand hatte weiße Linien überall darauf gemalt und Pfosten hineingetrieben,
Und ich weiß nicht, was noch alles,
Und ich schaute hinunter und sah fünf oder sechs Sträflinge auf und ab rennen und pfeifen.
Und dann schaute ich hinunter und sah diese hübschen Mädchen, die diese ganz kleinen kurzen Kleidchen trugen und herumtanzten,
Und so dachte ich, ich setze mich hin und schaue mal, was da passieren würde.
Ungefähr als ich mich richtig hingesetzt hatte, schaute ich hinunter und
Sah ich dreißig oder vierzig Männer aus einem Ende eines riesigen Außenklos dort unten herausrennen, und jeder
Wo ich saß, stand auf und schrie!
Und ich fragte diesen Kerl, der neben mir saß,
„Freund, weswegen schreien die denn so?“
Nun, er haute mir auf den Rücken und sagte:
„Kumpel, trink was!“ Ich sagte: „Nun, ich glaube, ich nehme noch ein großes Orangengetränk.“
Ich holte es mir und setzte mich wieder hin.
Als ich wieder hinschaute, sah ich, dass die Männer sich da unten in zwei ganz kleinen Gruppen ganz nah beieinander aufgestellt hatten, und sie stimmten ab.
Sie wählten je einen Mann, und diese beiden Männer kamen in die Mitte dieser Kuhweide und schüttelten Hände
Als hätten sie sich lange nicht gesehen.
Dann kam ein Sträfling dorthin, wo sie standen,
Und er holte einen Quarter heraus, und sie fingen direkt dort an, per Münzwurf zu entscheiden!
Nach einer Weile sah ich, worum es bei dem Münzwurf ging
Es war so, dass beide Gruppen diesen komisch aussehenden kleinen Kürbis zum Spielen haben wollten.
Und ich weiß, Freunde, dass sie ihn nicht essen konnten
Denn sie traten den ganzen Abend dagegen, und er ging nie kaputt.
Beide Gruppen wollten das Ding.
Eine Gruppe bekam ihn, und das machte die andere Gruppe so wütend, wie sie nur sein konnten!
Freunde, ich sah an diesem Abend die schrecklichste Schlägerei, die ich je in meinem ganzen Leben gesehen habe!
Sie rannten aufeinander los und traten sich gegenseitig und warfen sich gegenseitig zu Boden
Und trampelten aufeinander herum und rieben ihre Füße in den anderen hinein und
Ich weiß nicht, was noch alles, und sobald einer von ihnen verletzt wurde,
Nahmen sie ihn raus und ließen einen anderen reinlaufen!
Nun, das taten sie, solange ich da saß,
Aber ziemlich bald kam dieser Junge, der „Ticket, bitte“ gesagt hatte,
Zu mir herauf und sagte:
„Freund, Sie müssen gehen, weil Sie kein Ticket haben.“
Und ich sagte: „Nun, gut.“
Und ich stand auf und ging.
Ich weiß bis heute nicht, Freunde, was es war, das sie da unten taten, aber ich habe darüber nachgedacht.
Ich glaube, es war eine Art Wettbewerb, bei dem sie sehen,
Welche Gruppe von diesen Männern diesen Kürbis nehmen und von einem Ende der Kuhweide
Zum anderen rennen kann, ohne umgeworfen zu werden oder in etwas hineinzutreten.
