Belli sono gli alberi nel loro autunno

In grandi anelli spezzati
E roteando perdersi via

Io le ho viste, creature di luce
Così ora è triste il mio cuore
Tutto è cambiato da quando io

Potei udire sul capo come campane il battito delle loro ali
Ascoltando allora io camminavo con passo più leggero

Vanno instancabili, amanti a coppie
Seguono le fredde correnti amiche

The Swans of Coole

The trees are all bare in their autumn
The footpaths are dry in the wood
The moon in the water is silent
When October twilight has come

Fifty-nine swans
Among the stones in the stream below
My nineteenth autumn has come
Since I first made count of them

Suddenly I saw them flying
Broken circles in the air
Whirling away in a widening gyre
On the wind-blown water

Oh, I have seen them, creatures of light
So now my heart is sore
All things have changed since I
For the first time on this shore

Heard the beat of their wings in the air over me
And the music of their flight was a bell in my heart

They are tireless and love-prompted
They follow the cold currents of the air
Sailing and soaring and beating their wings
Their hearts have not grown old

Passion and conquest are theirs
Wherever they go their triumph they bring
But now they are silent and leisurely
Mysterious and beautiful

Among what rushes will they build
By what lakeside shall we find them

To find they have flown away
