Mentre il buffone camminava, il giardino immobile restava
La sua anima pregò di posarsi alla sua finestra
Ed i gufi cominciarono a chiamare

Ma la regina non le diede ascolto, si avvolse nella sua camicia
Le pesanti imposte tirò a sé ed il chiavistello abbassò
Ed il suo cuore lui pregò di andare a lei
Quando i gufi cessarono di chiamare
In una rossa veste palpitante
Lui cantò per lei oltre la soglia... oltre la soglia

Dolce la sua parola era al sogno di quella chioma ondeggiante
Ma dal tavolo lei prese il ventaglio e lo fece volare via
Ed allora il buffone pensò:
"Io ho il mio cappello a sonagli
Sino a lei io lo manderò
Ed allora poi io morirò... poi morirò"

Quando poi il mattino divenne bianco
Lasciò il cappello davanti ai suoi passi
Ed in seno lei se lo ripose
Sotto la nuvola dei capelli
Una canzone gli cantarono le sue labbra
Sinché le stelle non crebbero nell'aria
Lei aprì la sua porta e la finestra
L'anima e il cuore lei fece entrare... li fece entrare

Quello rosso venne alla sua destra
Quella blu alla sua sinistra

The Dream Hat

As the jester walked by, the garden remained still
His soul begged to alight at her window
And the owls began to hoot
As the soul arose, clad in blue
Its word was wise to her thought
Of that her step calm and light... so light

But the queen did not listen, she wrapped herself in her nightgown
She pulled the heavy shutters towards herself and lowered the bolt
And his heart he prayed to go to her
When the owls ceased to hoot
In a throbbing red robe
He sang for her beyond the threshold... beyond the threshold

Sweet was his word to the dream of that flowing mane
But from the table she took the fan and sent it flying away
And then the jester thought:
"I have my cap with bells
To her I will send it
And then I will die... then I will die"

When morning became white
He left the hat before her steps
And in her bosom she placed it
Beneath the cloud of her hair
A song her lips sang to it
Until the stars grew in the air
She opened her door and the window
The soul and the heart she let in... let them in

The red one came to her right
The blue one to her left
They made a noise like crickets
A sweet and wise chatter
Her hair was a flower still closed
Calmness of love was at her feet... was at her feet
