Il cappello a sonagli

Mentre il buffone camminava il giardino immobile restava;
La sua anima pregò di posarsi alla sua finestra.
Ed i gufi cominciarono a chiamare
Quando l′anima si levo', vestita in blu,
La sua parola era saggia al pensiero
Di quel suo passo calmo e leggero. così leggero.

Ma la regina non le diede ascolto, si avvolse nella sua camicia,
Le pesanti imposte tirò a se ed il chiavistello abbassò.

Ed il suo cuore lui prego′ di andare a lei,
Quando i gufi cessarono di chiamare;
In una rossa veste palpitante
Lui cantò per lei oltre la soglia... oltre la soglia.

Dolce la sua parola era al sogno di quella chioma ondeggiante;
Ma dal tavolo lei prese il ventaglio e lo fece volare via.

Ed allora il buffone pensò
"Io ho il mio cappello a sonagli,
Sino a lei io lo manderò
Ed allora poi io morirò... poi morirò."
Quando al mattino divenne bianco
Lasciò il cappello davanti ai suoi passi.

Ed in seno a lei se lo ripose,
Sotto la nuvola dei capelli,
Una canzone gli cantarono le sue labbra
Sinchè le stelle non crebbero nell'aria.

Lei aprì la sua porta e la finestra
L'anima e il cuore lei fece entrare... li fece entrare.
Quello rosso venne alla sua destra,
Quella blu alla sua sinistra.

Facevano un rumore come di grilli,
Un chiacchierio dolce e saggio.
I suoi capelli erano un fiore ancora chiuso
Quiete d′amore era ai suoi piedi... era ai suoi piedi.

Il cappello a sonagli

As the jester walked through the still garden;
His soul begged to alight at her windowpane.
And the owls began to hoot
As the soul arose in blue,
Her word a sage to her thought
Of that calm and gentle step...so gentle.

But the queen would not listen, she closed herself in her nightgown,
Pulled the heavy shutters shut and bolted the pane.

And her heart she begged to go after;
When the owls had ceased to call;
In a red and beating coat
He sang for her beyond the lintel…beyond the lintel.

Sweet was his word to the dream of her flowing hair;
But from the table she took up her fan and sent it flying.

Then the jester considered
"I have my cap of bells,
Unto her I will send it
And then I will surely die…I will surely die."
When the white of morning came
He left the cap before her footsteps.

And into her bosom she took it,
Under the cloud of her hair,
A song the lips of her sang to it
Till the stars grew in the air.

She opened her door and her window
The soul and the heart she made enter…she made enter.
The one in red came at her right,
The one in blue at her left.

They made a sound like crickets,
A sweet and wise chatter.
Her hair was a flower still closed
Quiet of love was at her feet…was at her feet.
