Ancora non era notte,

Frate Francesco chinò il capo
Ed al Signore tornò.
L′anima sua come luce
Oltre le nubi si levò

Nella gloria dei cieli entrò
Ed al calar delle ombre
Vennero le allodole cantando,
Sopra le case roteando
Stettero a lungo gridando.
Ancora non era notte,

Compiuto in lui ogni mistero
Frate Francesco spirò.

Before the night,
On the Saturday after Vespers,
Brother Francis bowed his head
And returned to the Lord.
His soul soared like a light
Above the clouds
Like a ship on the waters
He entered the glory of heaven.
And as the shadows fell
The larks sang and soared,
Circling above the houses
They cried out for a long time.
Before the night,
On the Saturday after Vespers,
Every mystery fulfilled in him,
Brother Francis breathed his last.
