Es war so finster und auch so bitter kalt.
Sie kamen an ein Häuschen von Pfefferkuchen fein:

Hu, hu, da schaut eine alte Hexe raus!
Sie lockt die Kinder ins Pfefferkuchenhaus.
Sie stellte sich gar freundlich, o Hänsel, welche Not!
Ihn wollt′ sie braten im Ofen braun wie Brot.

Doch als die Hexe zum Ofen schaut hinein,
Ward sie gestoßen von Hans und Gretelein.
Die Hexe mußte braten, die Kinder geh'n nach Haus.
Nun ist das Märchen von Hans und Gretel aus.

Hänsel and Gretel got lost in the woods.
It was so dark and also so bitterly cold.
They came to a little house made of gingerbread:
Who might the master of this little house be?

Boo, Boo, here peeps an old Witch!
She lures the children into the gingerbread house.
She presented herself as friendly, oh Hänsel, what a plight!
She wanted to roast him in the oven, brown as bread.

But when the Witch looked into the oven,
She was pushed in by Hans and Gretel.
The Witch had to roast, the children went home.
Now the fairy tale of Hans and Gretel is over.
