20 minutes late, I arrived at the New York Theater Workshop.

I jumped up on the stage and sang.

That was the director, Michael Greif.

"Was that it?"
Auditions always ended so quickly.

"I wanna introduce you to Jonathon Larson.
He's the writer of the show."

Jonathon,
A young looking, tall guy who's ears stuck out a bit too much,
Was all hunched up in his seat
Chewing on a pencil.

"You were in Dazed and Confused, weren't you?
I loved that movie."

"Thanks!"

Michael handed me a cassette and some sheet music.
"We'd like you to come back and sing the title song."

"Sure!"

This couldn't have come at a better moment.
It was September, 1994,
And I had just begun my first ever survival job
Since moving to New York
Five years earlier.
Pouring Decaf Double Tall Skin
No-White Mochas
At Starbucks.

Acting work had dried up over the past year
And I was now more broke than ever.

Les auditions finissent toujours si vite.

«Je veux te présenter Jonathon Larson.
Il est l'auteur de la pièce.»

Jonathon,
Un jeune homme grand et mince dont les oreilles dépassaient un peu trop,
Était tout recroquevillé sur son siège
En train de mâcher un crayon.

«Tu étais dans Dazed and Confused, n'est-ce pas ?
J'ai adoré ce film.»

«Merci !»

Michael m'a donné une cassette et quelques partitions.
«On aimerait que tu reviennes et que tu chantes la chanson titre.»

«Bien sûr !»

Ce n'aurait pas pu arriver à un meilleur moment.
C'était septembre 1994,
Et j'avais tout juste commencé mon premier travail de survie
Depuis mon déménagement à New York
Cinq ans plus tôt.
