流れ寄る 椰子の実一つ
故郷の岸を離れて

旧の樹は 生いや茂れる
枝はなお 影をやなせる

実をとりて 胸にあつれば
新たなり 流離の憂い
海の日の 沈むを見れば
激り落つ 異郷の涙

思いやる 八重の汐々
いずれの日にか 国に帰らん

The Coconut

From a distant island, unknown to me,
A coconut has drifted ashore,
Far from its native land.

Tell me, how many moons have you spent at sea?

Your former tree still flourishes,
Its branches still cast a shadow.
I, too, rest my head on the shore,
A solitary traveler, adrift.

When I hold your fruit to my breast,
I am filled with a new sadness,
As I watch the sun sink into the sea,
Tears of longing fall for my distant home.

I think of the vast ocean that separates me,
And wonder when I shall return to my homeland.
