Tulsi Ramayan Sampoorna Sunder Kaand
Tulsi Ramayan Sampoorna Sunder Kaand
Victory to the abode of auspiciousness, defeat to the abode of misfortune,
May you swiftly arrive, O charioteer of Sudarsana, the ever-playful one.
The pleasant words of Jambavan, upon hearing them Hanuman's heart was filled with great joy.
Therefore, brothers, you must support me, enduring hardships and consuming roots and fruits.
Once I return after seeing Sita, my task will be accomplished with immense joy.
Saying this, he bowed to all and departed with Raghunatha residing in his joyful heart.
On the shore of the ocean, there was a beautiful mountain, with astonishing leaps, he ascended upon it.
Repeatedly invoking Raghubir, the son of the wind, with immense strength, soared across.
The mountain where Hanuman placed his feet, it instantly moved towards the netherworld.
Just as the unfailing arrow of Raghupati, in the same manner, Hanuman journeyed.
The ocean, considering Raghupati's messenger, "May Mainaka alleviate your fatigue."
Hanuman touched him with respect and offered salutations once more.
Without accomplishing Rama's task, where can I find rest? ||1||
–––
–––
The gods observed the son of the wind as he journeyed, recognizing his exceptional strength and wisdom.
Surasā, the mother of serpents, was sent and spoke these words to him.
Today, the gods have offered me a meal, hearing her words, the son of the wind replied.
After completing Rama's task, I shall return, and inform the Lord about Sita's well-being.
Then, I shall enter your mouth, mother, I speak the truth, please believe me.
Through any means, she cannot be deceived, Hanuman said, "You will not be able to swallow me."
She expanded her mouth to a yojana wide, the monkey doubled his size.
Her mouth became sixteen yojanas wide, instantly, the son of the wind became thirty-two.
As Surasā increased the size of her mouth, the monkey doubled his form.
She made her mouth a hundred yojanas wide, the son of the wind assumed a minuscule form.
Entering her mouth, he came out again, and bowing his head, he asked for leave.
For whom the gods sent me, I have understood their intention, their strength and wisdom.
Rama's task you will all accomplish, you who possess strength and wisdom.
Giving blessings, she departed, and Hanuman, filled with joy, continued his journey. ||2||
–––
–––
A demoness resided within the ocean, creating illusions, she would capture birds from the sky.
Any creature that flew in the sky, upon seeing the water, their shadows would fall.
Seizing the shadow, she would prevent them from flying, in this way, she always devoured sky-dwellers.
She employed the same trickery on Hanuman, but the wise monkey quickly recognized her deceit.
The courageous son of the wind struck her down, and with a focused mind, crossed the ocean.
Reaching there, he witnessed the beauty of the forest, with buzzing bees and the allure of honey.
Various trees adorned with fruits and flowers, seeing flocks of birds and deer, his mind was delighted.
He saw a massive mountain ahead, casting aside fear, he climbed upon it with a swift pace.
Nothing is impossible for the monkey, when Lord's grace consumes even time itself.
Ascending the mountain, he beheld Lanka, its extraordinary fortifications beyond description.
The vast ocean surrounded it on all sides, with golden ramparts radiating supreme brilliance.
Golden fortresses adorned with exquisite gems, densely packed with beautiful temples.
Crossroads, markets, squares, and streets, the city was constructed in various ways.
Elephants, horses, mules, countless pedestrians, chariots and troops, who could count them all?
Hordes of multi-formed demons, incredibly powerful armies, impossible to describe. ||1||
Forests, gardens, groves, orchards, lakes, wells, and stepwells, all captivating.
Men, serpents, gods, gandharvas, maidens of exquisite beauty, captivating even the minds of sages.
Somewhere, colossal demons, as vast as mountains, roared with immense strength.
In various arenas, they wrestled, each one challenging the other in diverse ways. ||2||
With vigilance, millions of warriors, with grotesque bodies, guarded the city in all directions.
Buffaloes, humans, cows, donkeys, goats, wicked demons, all mingled together.
Therefore, Tulsidas has recounted a small portion of their tale.
May all beings, forsaking their bodies at the sacred shores of Raghubir, attain liberation. ||3||
Seeing the numerous guards of the city, the monkey contemplated in his mind.
I shall assume a minuscule form and explore the city at night. ||3||
–––
–––
Assuming a form as small as a mosquito, remembering the Lord, the monkey proceeded towards Lanka.
A demoness named Lankini, exclaimed, "O sleepless one, where do you think you are going?"
Foolish one, you do not know my ways, wherever a thief goes, there lies my meal.
The great monkey struck her with a single blow, she fell to the ground, vomiting blood.
Recovering, she rose again, and with folded hands, spoke with fear and trembling.
When Brahma granted a boon to Ravana, departing, the creator said to me, "Recognize this sign."
When you are struck by a monkey and become helpless, then know that the destruction of the demons is near.
Father, I am exceedingly blessed, to have seen with my own eyes the messenger of Rama.
Father, place the joys of heaven, liberation, and all other pleasures on one side of a scale.
They will not even equal the weight of a single strand of cotton compared to the joy of the company of the righteous. ||4||
–––
–––
Entering the city, accomplish all tasks, keeping the king of Kosala in your heart.
Even if enemies mix poison with nectar, or the ocean merges with fire,
Or Garuda becomes like a speck of dust compared to Mount Meru, Rama's grace can make it happen.
Hanuman assumed a very small form and entered the city, remembering the Lord.
He searched every temple and palace, and everywhere he saw countless warriors.
He went to the palace of Dasanana, its extraordinary nature is beyond description.
The monkey saw him sleeping there, but Vaidehi was nowhere to be seen in the palace.
Then he saw another beautiful building, a separate temple of Hari had been constructed there.
That abode, adorned with the symbol of Rama's bow, its beauty is indescribable.
Seeing a fresh cluster of nine Tulsi plants there, the monkey rejoiced. ||5||
–––
–––
Lanka is the dwelling place of hordes of demons, how could any righteous person reside here?
The monkey began to lose hope in his mind, at that very moment, Vibhishana awoke.
He chanted "Rama Rama," and upon hearing this, the monkey's heart rejoiced, recognizing a virtuous soul.
With this belief, he decided to make himself known, no harm can come from a saintly being.
Assuming the form of a Brahmin, he spoke, upon hearing him, Vibhishana arose and approached.
Offering salutations, he inquired about his well-being, "O Brahmin, please reveal your identity."
Are you one of the servants of Hari? My heart feels a great affinity towards you.
Are you a devotee of Rama, the compassionate one? Your arrival has made me extremely fortunate.
Then Hanuman revealed the entire story of Rama and his own name.
Hearing this, their bodies were filled with horripilation, and their minds with joy.
