They roused him with muffins—they roused him with ice—
They roused him with mustard and cress—
They roused him with jam and judicious advice—
They sent him conundrums to guess.

When at length he sat up and was able to speak,
A sad story he offered to tell;
And the Bellman cried Silence! Not even a shriek!
And excitedly tingled his bell.

There was silence supreme! Not a shriek, not a scream,
Scarcely even a howl or a groan,
As the man they called Ho! told his story of woe
In an antediluvian tone.

You may seek it with thimbles—and seek it with care;
You may hunt it with forks and a hoe;
You may threaten its life with a railway-share;
You may charm it with smiles and soap—

But oh, beamish nephew, beware of the day,
If your Snark be a Boojum! For then
You will softly and suddenly vanish away,
And never be met with again!'

It is that, it is this that oppresses my soul,
When I think of my uncle's last words:
And my heart is like nothing so much as a bowl
Brimming over with quivering curds!

I engage with the Snark—each night after dark—
In a dreamy delirious fight:
I serve it with greens in those shadowy scenes,
And I use it for striking a light

But if ever I meet with a Boojum, that day,
In a moment (of this I am sure),
I shall softly and suddenly vanish away—
And the notion I cannot endure!

Ils l'ont réveillé avec des muffins - ils l'ont réveillé avec de la glace -
Ils l'ont réveillé avec de la moutarde et du cresson -
Ils l'ont réveillé avec de la confiture et des conseils judicieux -
Ils lui ont envoyé des énigmes à deviner.

Quand enfin il s'est redressé et a pu parler,
Il a offert une triste histoire à raconter ;
Et le Sonneur a crié Silence ! Pas même un cri !
Et a fait tinter sa cloche avec excitation.

Il y a eu un silence suprême ! Pas un cri, pas un cri,
À peine même un hurlement ou un gémissement,
Alors que l'homme qu'ils appelaient Ho ! racontait son histoire de malheur
D'un ton antédiluvien.

Tu peux le chercher avec des dé à coudre - et le chercher avec soin ;
Tu peux le chasser avec des fourchettes et une houe ;
Tu peux menacer sa vie avec une action de chemin de fer ;
Tu peux le charmer avec des sourires et du savon -

Mais oh, neveu radieux, méfie-toi du jour,
Si ton Snark est un Boojum ! Car alors
Tu vas doucement et soudainement disparaître,
Et ne jamais être rencontré à nouveau !

C'est ça, c'est ça qui opprime mon âme,
Quand je pense aux derniers mots de mon oncle :
Et mon cœur n'est rien de plus qu'un bol
Débordant de caillés qui tremblent !

Je m'engage avec le Snark - chaque nuit après la tombée de la nuit -
Dans un combat de rêve délirant :
Je le sers avec des légumes verts dans ces scènes ombragées,
Et je l'utilise pour allumer une lumière

Mais si jamais je rencontre un Boojum, ce jour-là,
En un instant (j'en suis sûre),
Je vais doucement et soudainement disparaître -
Et l'idée que je ne peux pas supporter !
