and i say that if your lips
which i have loved
should touch another's
and your dear strong fingers clutch his heart
as mine in time not far away
If on another's face your sweet hair lay
in such a silence as i know
or such great writhing words as, uttering overmuch
stand helplessly before the spirit at bay
If this should be, i say if this should be
you of my heart, send me a little word
that i may go unto her, and take her hands saying
accept all happiness from me
then shall i turn my face
and hear one bird sing terribly afar in the lost lands

Ce ne sera peut-être pas toujours le cas
et je dis que si tes lèvres
que j'ai aimées
doivent toucher celles d'un autre
et tes chers doigts forts saisissent son cœur
comme les miens dans un avenir pas si lointain
Si sur un autre visage tes doux cheveux reposent
dans un silence que je connais
ou dans de grands mots tourmentés, trop prononcés
se tiennent impuissants devant l'esprit à bay
Si cela devait arriver, je dis si cela devait arriver
toi de mon cœur, envoie-moi un petit mot
que j'aille vers elle, et lui prenne les mains en disant
accepte tout le bonheur que je te donne
alors je tournerai le dos
et j'entendrai un oiseau chanter terriblement au loin dans les terres perdues
