I was laying in bed

I had a job in the great north woods
Working as a cook for a spell
But I never did like it all that much
And one day the axe just fell
So I drifted down to New Orleans
Where I's lucky for to be employed
Working for a while on a fishing boat
Right outside of Delacroix
But all the while I was alone
The past was close behind
I seen a lot of women

But she never escaped my mind and I just grew

She was working in a topless place
And I stopped in for a beer
I just kept looking at the sight of her face

And later on when the crowd thinned out
I's just about to do the same
She was standing there in back of my chair
Said, "Tell me, don't I know your name?"
I muttered something underneath my breath
She studied the lines on my face

I must admit I felt a little uneasy
When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe

She lit a burner on the stove and offered me a pipe
"I thought you'd never say hello," she said
"You look like the silent type"
Then she opened up a book of poems
And handed it to me
Written by an Italian poet
From the thirteenth century
And every one of them words rang true

And glowed like burning coal
Pouring off of every page
Like it was written in my soul from me to you

I lived with them on Montagüe Street
In a basement down the stairs
There was music in the cafés at night
And revolution in the air
Then he started into dealing with slaves
And something inside of him died
She had to sell everything she owned
And froze up inside

And when finally the bottom fell out
I became withdrawn
The only thing I knew how to do
Was to keep on keeping on like a bird that flew

I got to get her somehow
All the people we used to know
They're an illusion to me now

On s'est séparés par une nuit sombre et triste
En convenant que c'était mieux ainsi
Elle s'est retournée pour me regarder
Alors que je m'éloignais
Je l'ai entendue dire par-dessus mon épaule
"On se reverra un jour sur l'avenue"

J'avais un boulot dans les grands bois du Nord
Je travaillais comme cuisinier pendant un certain temps
Mais je n'ai jamais vraiment aimé ça
Et un jour, la hache est tombée
Alors j'ai dérivé jusqu'à la Nouvelle-Orléans
Où j'ai eu la chance d'être employé
Travaillant pendant un certain temps sur un bateau de pêche
Juste à côté de Delacroix
Mais pendant tout ce temps, j'étais seul
Le passé était proche derrière moi
J'ai vu beaucoup de femmes

Mais elle ne m'a jamais quitté l'esprit et je suis devenu de plus en plus

Elle travaillait dans un cabaret
Et je me suis arrêté prendre une bière
Je n'arrêtais pas de regarder son visage

Et plus tard, quand la foule s'est éclaircie

Elle se tenait derrière ma chaise
Elle a dit : "Dis-moi, je ne connais pas ton nom ?"

Et chacun de ces mots sonnait juste

Et brillait comme du charbon ardent
Se déversant de chaque page
Comme s'il avait été écrit dans mon âme, de moi à toi

J'ai vécu avec eux rue Montagüe
Dans un sous-sol en bas des escaliers
Il y avait de la musique dans les cafés la nuit
Et la révolution dans l'air
Puis il s'est mis à trafiquer des esclaves
Et quelque chose en lui est mort
Elle a dû vendre tout ce qu'elle possédait
Et s'est figée à l'intérieur

Et quand finalement le fond s'est effondré
Je me suis replié sur moi-même
La seule chose que je savais faire
C'était de continuer à avancer comme un oiseau qui volait

Alors maintenant je retourne en arrière
Je dois la retrouver d'une manière ou d'une autre
Tous les gens qu'on connaissait
Ils sont une illusion pour moi maintenant
Certains sont mathématiciens
Certaines sont femmes de menuisiers
Je ne sais pas comment tout cela a commencé
Je ne sais pas ce qu'ils font de leur vie
Mais moi, je suis toujours sur la route
En route pour un autre concert
On a toujours ressenti la même chose
On voyait juste les choses d'un point de vue différent
