Am Rande von Nordrhein-Westfalen
Zwischen Elsdorf und Niederzier
Im Dürener Lande, direkt an der Kante
Zum Rheinischen Kohle Revier
Da steht ein verwunschener Wald
Der ist schon zwölftausend Jahre alt

Es gibt in ganz Mitteleuropa
Ein vergleichbares Areal
Und Habitat für manch stark gefährdete Art
In der Tat kein weiteres Mal
In dieser Form und Gestalt
Wie den Hambacher Wald

Doch das Gebiet, wo er steht
Gehört leider dem Stromkonzern RWE
Und der hält den Braunkohleabbau
Nach wie vor für 'ne super Idee
Und macht vor nichts und niemandem Halt
Auch nicht vor dem Hambacher Wald

Für die Stromgewinnung aus Kohle
Der Region ehemals ganzer Stolz
Werden hier sämtliche örtlichen Dörfer zerstört
Und der Wald abgeholzt
Und der Schaufelradbagger hat sich bald
Auch noch das letzte Bisschen gekrallt

Dabei weiß man eigentlich schon mittlerweile
Wenn man Kohle verfeuert
Ist das fürs Klima nicht so prima
Sondern total bescheuert
Mega umweltschädlich, ineffizient,
Veraltet und überteuert
Statt dass man endlich mal konsequent
Energie nachhaltig erneuert
Ich wundere mich, dass unsere Bundesregierung
Das umzusetzen die Scheu hat
Und stattdessen das Schiff einfach unbeirrt
Auf die Klippen zusteuert
Wie wichtig ihr Klima und Umweltschutz sei
Wird mantramäßig beteuert
Leute, auf diesem falschen Dampfer
Habe ich nicht angeheuert

Ein lebendiger Wald soll hier weichen
Für eine sterbende Industrie
Das halten viele hier, inklusive mir
Für schiere Idiotie
Deshalb kämpfen wir für den Erhalt
Des letzten Restes vom Hambacher Wald

Und es geht dabei ums große Ganze
Und nicht um den einzelnen Baum
Sondern um unseren grundsätzlichen Umgang
Mit unser aller Lebensraum
Und darum ist der Hambacher Wald
Ein Wald spitzen Wohlgehalt

Doch RWE lässt nun eiskalt
Da hier die Umwelt noch nie so viel galt
Den Wald räumen mit roher Gewalt
Und die Kettensägen kommen bald
Freunde, seid ihr für den Erhalt
Von Umwelt und Artenvielfalt
Dann hebt eure Hände und ballt
Sie zur Faust, für den Hambacher Wald
Damit der Protest nicht verhallt
Sondern im ganzen Lande erschallt
Erheben wir uns - Jung und Alt
Und schützen den Hambacher Wald

Hambach Forest

On the edge of North Rhine-Westphalia
Between Elsdorf and Niederzier
In the Düren region, right on the edge
To the Rhineland Coal District
There stands an enchanted forest
It's been twelve thousand years old

There is no other area in Central Europe
Comparable in size
And habitat for many endangered species
Indeed, there's no other place
In this form and shape
Like the Hambach Forest

But the area where it stands
Unfortunately, belongs to the energy giant RWE
And he still considers brown coal mining
A great idea
And stops at nothing and no one
Not even the Hambach Forest

For power generation from coal
The region's former pride
All the local villages are being destroyed here
And the forest is being felled
And the bucket-wheel excavator will soon
Clawed the last bit too

But we actually know by now
If you burn coal
It's not so good for the climate
It's totally stupid
Mega environmentally harmful, inefficient,
Outdated and overpriced
Instead of finally being consistent
Renewing energy sustainably
I'm surprised that our federal government
Is afraid to implement this
And instead, simply steers the ship unperturbed
Towards the rocks
How important climate and environmental protection are
Is chanted like a mantra
Honey, I haven't signed up for this wrong steamer
I didn't sign up for this wrong ship

A living forest should give way here
For a dying industry
Many here, including me
Consider this sheer idiocy
Therefore, we fight for the preservation
Of the last remnants of the Hambach Forest

And it's about the bigger picture
And not about the individual tree
But about our fundamental approach
To our common living space
And that's why the Hambach Forest
Is a forest of top quality

But RWE is now cold-blooded
Because the environment has never been so important here
Clearing the forest with brute force
And the chainsaws are coming soon
Friends, are you for the preservation
Of the environment and biodiversity
Then raise your hands and clench
Them into a fist, for the Hambach Forest
So that the protest does not go unheard
But resounds throughout the country
Let us rise up - young and old
And protect the Hambach Forest
