Ek man jötna
ár of borna,
þá er forðum mik
Fædda höfðu;

Jörð fannsk æva

Áðr Burs synir
Bjöðum of yppðu,
þeir er Miðgarð
Mæran skópu;
Sól skein sunnan
á salar steina,
þá var grund gróin
Grænum lauki.

Sól varp sunnan,
Sinni mána,
Hendi inni hægri
Um himinjöður;
Sól þat né vissi,
Hvar hon sali átti,
Máni þat né vissi,
Hvat hann megins átti,
Stjörnur þat né vissu
Hvar þær staði áttu.

Þá gengu regin öll
á rökstóla,
Ginnheilög goð,
Ok um þat gættusk;
Nótt ok niðjum
Nöfn of gáfu,
Morgin hétu
Ok miðjan dag,
Undorn ok aftan,
árum at telja.

Hittusk æsir
á Iðavelli,
þeir er hörg ok hof
Hátimbruðu;
Afla lögðu,
Auð smíðuðu,
Tangir skópu
Ok tól gørðu.

Ár var alda,
þar er ekki var,
Var-a sandr né sær
Né svalar unnir;
Jörð fannsk æva
Né upphiminn,
Gap var ginnunga
En gras hvergi.

Joln

One man of giants
in the beginning of time,
when they gave birth to me
in the past;
Nine homes I remember,
Nine worlds,
Honored giantess
From beneath the earth.

An age was of ages,
when nothing existed,
there was no sand nor sea,
nor cool waves;
the earth was not found
nor heaven above,
a gaping void was there
but no grass anywhere.

Before the sons of Bur
lifted up heaven,
they created the famous
Midgard;
The sun lit from the south
on the stones of the hall,
then was the ground covered
with green fields.

The sun turned to the south,
Called by the moon,
with its right hand
Along the poles of heaven;
The sun did not know
where its halls were,
The moon did not know
what its strength was,
The stars did not know
where their places were.

Then went all the gods
to their judgment seats,
The holy gods,
And considered this:
Night and New Moon
were given names,
They named morning
and midday,
Afternoon and evening,
to count the years with.

The aesir met
on the Iðavelli,
they who created the holy places and temples
magnificently;
They laid down smithies,
made treasures,
created tongs
and made tools.
