Carmina Burana: II. Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi: Fortunae plango vulnera (I lament the wounds that Fortune deals)
Carmina Burana: II. Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi: Fortunae plango vulnera (I lament the wounds that Fortune deals)
Fortune plango vulnera
O Fortune, I lament the wounds
Stillantibus ocellis
Which trickle from mine eyes,
Quod sua michi munera
As you withdraw your favours from me
Subtrahit rebellis.
And scorn my pleas for grace.
Verum est, quod legitur,
It's true that, as is often said,
Fronte capillata,
Your face is fair to see,
Sed plerumque sequitur
But you often turn your back on us
Occasio calvata.
And leave us to despair.
In fortune solio
Upon the wheel of Fortune
Sederam elatus
I sat enthroned on high,
Prosperitatis vario
Crowned with every varied flower
Flore coronatus;
Of transient prosperity;
Quicquid enim florui
Yet all the while I flourished
Felix et beatus,
In happiness and bliss,
Nunc a summo corrui
Now I have fallen from my height
Gloria privatus.
And lost my former glory.
Fortune rota volvitur;
The wheel of Fortune turns;
Descendo minoratus;
I sink right down before you;
Alter in altum tollitur;
Another man is raised on high,
Nimis exaltatus
Exalted far too much.
Rex sedet in vertice
The king sits on his throne,
Caveat ruinam!
Let him beware his downfall!
Nam sub axe legimus
For we read beneath the sun
Hecubam reginam.
The tale of Hecuba the queen.
