"Ven conmigo, pobrecita"
Le di un beso y la cieguita tuvo ya con quien jugar

Y así fue que, diariamente, al llegar con su viejita
Me buscaba, la cieguita, con tantísimo interés
Qué feliz era la pobre cuando junto a mí llegaba
Y con sus mimos lograba que jugásemos los tres

Pero un día, bien me acuerdo, no fue más que la viejita
Que me dijo: "la cieguita está a punto de expirar"
Fui corriendo hasta su cuna, la cieguita ya moría
Y, al morirse, me decía: "¿con quién vas ahora a jugar?"

Y, a punto fijo, no sé si el dolor que sentí
Fue escuchando el adiós de la nena
O fue que, cuando miré a su vieja, advertí
Que lloraba en silencio su pena
Ay, cieguita, yo no te podré olvidar
Pues, me acuerdo de mi hijita
Que también era cieguita y no podía jugar

The Little Blind Girl

Despite the passage of time since then
My heart, still moved, is filled with remorse
From that day when, walking in the park, I saw a blind girl on a bench
And beside her the old woman who was her guide and her love

I noticed that the little girl, with her big, empty eyes
Was listening to the shouts of other girls skipping
And I heard her, bitterly, in a tone of complaint
Ask the old woman, "Why can't I play?"

And, I don't know for sure, if the pain I felt
Was from hearing the girl's voice
Or was it that, when I looked at her old woman, I saw
That she was silently weeping for her
"Oh, little blind girl!" I said, with great sorrow
"Come with me, poor little thing"
I kissed her and the little blind girl had someone to play with

And so it was that, every day, when she arrived with her old woman
She would look for me, the little blind girl, with such interest
How happy the poor girl was when she came to me
And with her affection, she made us play all three

But one day, I remember well, only the old woman came
Who said to me: "the little blind girl is about to die"
I ran to her cradle, the little blind girl was dying
And, as she died, she said to me: "Who will you play with now?"

And, I don't know for sure, if the pain I felt
Was from hearing the girl's farewell
Or was it that, when I looked at her old woman, I saw
That she was silently weeping for her

For, I think of my little daughter
Who was also blind and could not play
