En este mi testamento
Que escribo con un pie fuera

Un sexto dejo al obispo
Para que amplíe su iglesia
Más no sé porqué lo hago
Si casi nunca se llena

Otro sexto al matasanos
Para que amplíe su ciencia
Y así al morir sus pacientes
No le angustie su conciencia

Otro sexto a las solteras
Para perfumes y sedas
Un altar a San Antonio
En donde quepan más velas

Otro sexto a la alcaldía
Para que en obras lo invierta
Aunque luego el edil haga
Lo que en la gana le venga

Otro sexto a mi patrona
Con quien contraje mil deudas
A ver si así se decide
A tapar estas goteras

Por último el otro sexto
Lo dejo para mi epitafio
En donde pueda leerse
Con buena letra y bien claro

Aquí reposan los huesos
Porque los huesos vivían
De un hombre al que no pudieron
Ni estudiar su anatomía

Aquí reposan los restos
De un político altanero
Que no puso la otra mejilla
Pero al que en las dos le dieron

De quien no supo de celos
De quien no tuvo prejuicios
Y así le llegó la muerte
En perfecto y sano juicio

De quien no bañó con vino
Su estómago y sus desgracias
Y que en sus ochenta años
No vivió la democracia

The Testament

In this my testament
Which I write with one foot outside
Which I write with one foot inside
This world and whatever comes

I shall divide my assets
I shall divide my inheritance
Into six equal portions
As are here enumerated

One sixth I leave to the bishop
So that he may enlarge his church
I don't know why I do it
If it never gets filled

Another sixth to the quack doctor
So that he may expand his knowledge
And so that when his patients die
His conscience will not be disturbed

Another sixth to the spinsters
For perfumes and silks
An altar to Saint Anthony
Where they can fit more candles

Another sixth to the mayor's office
For him to invest in projects
Even though the mayor will do
Whatever he wants

Another sixth to my patron saint
To whom I owe a thousand debts
Let's see if he decides now
To patch these leaks

Lastly the other sixth
I leave for my epitaph
Where they can read it
In good handwriting and very clearly

Here lie the bones
Because the bones lived
Of a man they couldn't
Neither study his anatomy

Here lie the remains
Of a haughty politician
Who did not turn the other cheek
But who was hit on both

Of he who knew no jealousy
Of he who had no prejudices
And so death came to him
In perfect and sound judgment

Of he who did not bathe his stomach
With wine and his misfortunes
And who in his eighty years
Did not live democracy
