J'ai ouvert les yeux sur un meublé triste
Rue Monsieur-le-Prince au Quartier Latin
Dans un milieu de chanteurs et d'artistes
Qu'avaient un passé, pas de lendemain
Des gens merveilleux un peu fantaisistes
Qui parlaient le russe et puis l'arménien

Si mon père était chanteur d'opérette
Nanti d'une voix que j'envie encore
Ma mère tenait l'emploi de soubrette
Et leur troupe ne roulait pas sur l'or
Mais ma soeur et moi étions à la fête
Blottis dans un coin derrière un décor

Tous ces comédiens chargés de famille
Mais dont le français était hésitant
Devaient accepter pour gagner leur vie
Le premier emploi qui était vacant
Conduire un taxi ou tirer l'aiguille
Ça pouvait se faire avec un accent

Après le travail, les jours de semaine
Ces acteurs frustrés répétaient longtemps
Pour le seul plaisir un soir par quinzaine
De s'offrir l'oubli des soucis d'argent
Et crever de trac en entrant en scène
Devant un public formé d'émigrants

Quand les fins de mois étaient difficiles
Quand il faisait froid, que le pain manquait
On allait souvent, honteux et fébriles
Au Mont de piété où l'on engageait
Un vieux samovar, des choses futiles
Objets du passé, auxquels on tenait

On parlait de ceux morts près du Bosphore
Buvait à la vie, buvait aux copains
Les femmes pleuraient, et jusqu'au aurores
Les hommes chantaient quelques vieux refrains
Qui venaient de loin, du fond d'un folklore
Où vivaient la mort, l'amour et le vin

Nous avions toujours des amis à table
Le peu qu'on avait, on le partageait
Mes parents disaient "Ce serait le diable
Si demain le ciel ne nous le rendait"
Ce n'était pas là geste charitable
Ils aimaient les autres, et Dieu nous aidait

Tandis que devant poêles et casseroles
Mon père cherchait sa situation
Jour et nuit sous une lampe à pétrole
Ma mère brodait pour grande maison
Et nous avant que d'aller à l'école
Faisions le ménage et les commissions

Ainsi j'ai grandi sans contrainte aucune
Me soûlant la nuit, travaillant le jour
Ma vie a connu diverses fortunes
J'ai frôlé la mort, j'ai trouvé l'amour
J'ai eu des enfants qui m'ont vu plus d'une fois
Me souvenir, le coeur un peu lourd

Autobiography

I opened my eyes in a dreary furnished room,
On Monsieur-le-Prince Street in the Latin Quarter,
Among singers and artists,
Who had a past, but no tomorrow.
Wonderful people, a little whimsical,
Speaking Russian and Armenian.

My father was an operetta singer,
Blessed with a voice I still envy,
My mother played the role of a soubrette,
And their troupe wasn't rolling in gold.
But my sister and I were at the party,
Huddled in a corner behind the scenery.

All these actors with families to support,
Their French hesitant and unsure,
Had to accept, to earn their living,
The first job that came their way.
Driving a taxi or sewing garments,
It could be done with an accent.

After work, on weekdays,
These frustrated actors rehearsed for hours,
For the sole pleasure, one evening a fortnight,
Of forgetting their money worries,
And dying of stage fright upon entering the scene,
Before an audience of emigrants.

When the end of the month was difficult,
When it was cold, and bread was scarce,
We often went, ashamed and feverish,
To the pawnshop where we pawned,
An old samovar, futile things,
Objects of the past, to which we clung.

We talked about those who died near the Bosphorus,
Drank to life, drank to friends,
The women cried, and until dawn,
The men sang some old refrains,
That came from afar, from the depths of folklore,
Where death, love, and wine lived on.

We always had friends at the table,
The little we had, we shared it,
My parents used to say, "It would be the devil,
If tomorrow the sky didn't give it back to us."
It wasn't a charitable gesture,
They loved others, and God helped us.

While in front of stoves and pots,
My father was looking for his next job,
Day and night under a kerosene lamp,
My mother embroidered for a big house,
And before we went to school,
We did the cleaning and the errands.

So I grew up without any constraints,
Getting drunk at night, working during the day,
My life has known various fortunes,
I brushed with death, I found love,
I had children who saw me more than once,
Remembering, with a slightly heavy heart.
