Me and my buddy got us a wild hair
And figured we wanted to go somewhere
So we loaded up in my ragtop Chevrolet
We had a little bit of money and a whole lot of show
And with Hank Junior blaring on the radio
We got a tank full of gas and we was on our way

We figured we'd go down to New Orleans
We were barrelling' down old 17
When a man with a blinking red light was on our tail
He said, "You were doin' 60 in a 45
But I'm gonna let you go this time
But if I catch you again, I'm gonna slap you in the county jail"

We said, "Thank you sir, you sure been nice
And you ain't gonna have to tell us twice"
And we were Southbound and down with the wind blowing in our faces
We kept on rolling and pretty soon
The radio was cooking out a haggard tune
And we were pulling into Houston and checking out all the places

I was feeling dry and I said, "I think
We ought to stop and get ourselves a drink"
Old Jim said, "Yeah 'cause we got time to kill"
We kept on rolling and I seen this spot
We pulled into the parking lot
Of this place called, 'The Cloud Nine Bar and Grill'

We walked through the door and the place was jammed
The lights were low, they had a punk rock band
And some orange haired feller singing about suicide
I said, "Jim, this ain't our kind of place
He said, "Well, let's just have one round anyway"
So against my better judgment we walked on inside

Went up to the bar and we sat down
This feller walked up and said, "I'll buy this round"
And he sat down on the barstool next to Jim
He looked like a girl but he talked like a guy
He had lipstick on and mascara in his eyes
And everybody in that place looked just about like him

I said, "Jim, this ain't our kind of bar
Let's just go on out and get back in the car
'Cause there's gonna be trouble, ain't no sense in taking a chance"
We was getting up, getting ready to leave
When somebody grabbed old Jim by the sleeve
And this good looking girl, she was asking my buddy to dance

I said, "Jim, don't do it, there's something missing
There's fellers dancing and fellers kissing
There's a feller in high heeled shoes wearing panty hose"
He said, "Partner, I just can't turn this down
You just go over there and have one more round
I'll dance with the lady and we'll get on down the road"

So he walked away and left me alone
But this funny looking feller kept coming on
And he was making me mad with some of the things he said
Then he put his hand on my knee
I said, "If you don't get your paw off me
I'm gonna locate your nose around the other side of your head"

He said, "I love it when you get that fire in your eye
I said, "Well, partner try this on for size"
And I unloaded on him and he went out like a light
Everybody in that place must have been his friend
They all headed for me, I said, "This is the end"
But where I come from, we don't give up without a fight

They were screaming and yelling and scratching and clawing
I was punching and hitting and kicking and pawing
I was holding my own, 'cause I've been in a scrap or two
Old Jim come running up out of the blue
And that gal he was with, come running up too
And proceeded to beat on me with a high heel shoe

I grabbed her by the hair it came off in my hand
And that beautiful girl was just a beautiful man
And old Jim just got sick right there on the floor
He dropped that dude like a shot from a gun
Smeared his lipstick, made his makeup run
And me and old Jim started fighting our way to the door

Man, we lit out of there in that Chevrolet
I put in on the floor and it stayed that way
We was going' down the highway doing about a hundred and ten
We were headed for home and we was getting nearer
Then a red light came on the rear view mirror
And that same blame cop was pulling us over again

Now I'm sitting' here in this county jail
I had to call my Daddy to go our bail
But I learned me a lesson that I never will forget again
I've done give up drinking', I've give up bars
And running around the country in souped up cars
I'm going back where the women are women and the men are men

On dévalait la vieille route 17
Quand un gars avec un gyrophare rouge nous est tombé dessus
Il a dit : "Vous faisiez 90 dans une zone à 70
Mais je vous laisse filer cette fois-ci
Mais si je vous reprends, je vous fous au trou"

On a dit : "Merci monsieur, vous êtes bien gentil
Et vous n'aurez pas besoin de nous le dire deux fois"
Et on filait vers le sud, le vent dans la figure
On a continué à rouler et bientôt
La radio crachait un air bizarre
Et on arrivait à Houston, on regardait tous les endroits

J'avais soif et j'ai dit : "Je pense
Qu'on devrait s'arrêter prendre un verre"
Le vieux Jim a dit : "Ouais, parce qu'on a du temps à tuer"
On a continué à rouler et j'ai vu cet endroit
On s'est garés sur le parking
De cet endroit appelé "Le Cloud Nine Bar and Grill"

On est entrés et l'endroit était bondé
Lumières basses, un groupe de punk rock
Et un type aux cheveux orange qui chantait sur le suicide
J'ai dit : "Jim, c'est pas notre genre d'endroit"
Il a dit : "Bon, on prend juste un verre quand même"
Alors, malgré mon mauvais pressentiment, on est entrés

On s'est approchés du bar et on s'est assis
Un type s'est approché et a dit : "Je vous offre ce verre"
Et il s'est assis sur le tabouret à côté de Jim
On aurait dit une fille mais il parlait comme un mec
Il avait du rouge à lèvres et du mascara
Et tout le monde dans cet endroit lui ressemblait

J'ai dit : "Jim, c'est pas notre genre de bar
Allons-y, on retourne à la voiture
Parce qu'il va y avoir des problèmes, ça sert à rien de prendre des risques"
On se levait, on s'apprêtait à partir
Quand quelqu'un a attrapé Jim par la manche
Et cette jolie fille, elle demandait à mon pote de danser

J'ai dit : "Jim, fais pas ça, il y a un truc qui cloche
Y a des mecs qui dansent et des mecs qui s'embrassent
Y a un mec en talons hauts qui porte des collants"
Il a dit : "Mon vieux, je peux pas refuser ça
Va t'asseoir là-bas et prends un autre verre
Je vais danser avec la dame et on reprend la route"

Alors il est parti et m'a laissé seul
Mais ce drôle de type n'arrêtait pas de me tourner autour
Et il commençait à me mettre en colère avec ses paroles
Puis il a mis sa main sur mon genou
J'ai dit : "Si tu enlèves pas tes pattes de là
Je vais te faire passer le nez de l'autre côté de la tête"

Il a dit : "J'adore quand tu as ce regard furieux"
J'ai dit : "Bon, essaie un peu ça pour voir"
Et je l'ai frappé, il s'est effondré comme une masse
Tout le monde dans cet endroit devait être son ami
Ils se sont tous dirigés vers moi, j'ai dit : "C'est la fin"
Mais là d'où je viens, on n'abandonne pas sans se battre

Ils hurlaient, criaient, griffaient et mordaient
Je donnais des coups de poing, des coups de pied, je me débattais
Je tenais bon, parce que j'ai déjà participé à une ou deux bagarres
Le vieux Jim est arrivé en courant de nulle part
Et la fille avec qui il était est arrivée en courant aussi
Et elle s'est mise à me frapper avec son talon aiguille

Je l'ai attrapée par les cheveux, ça m'est resté dans la main
Et cette belle fille n'était qu'un beau mec
Et le vieux Jim est tombé malade, là, par terre
Il a lâché ce type comme une vieille chaussette
Son rouge à lèvres a bavé, son maquillage a coulé
Et le vieux Jim et moi, on s'est frayé un chemin jusqu'à la porte

Mec, on a déguerpi de là dans cette Chevrolet
J'ai appuyé sur le champignon et je l'ai pas lâché
On roulait sur l'autoroute à environ 180
On rentrait à la maison, on s'en rapprochait
Puis une lumière rouge est apparue dans le rétroviseur
Et ce satané flic nous faisait encore arrêter

Maintenant, je suis assis ici, dans cette prison du comté
J'ai dû appeler mon père pour qu'il vienne me sortir de là
Mais j'ai appris une leçon que je n'oublierai jamais
J'ai arrêté de boire, j'ai arrêté les bars
Et de parcourir le pays dans des voitures trafiquées
Je retourne là où les femmes sont des femmes et les hommes des hommes
