Um im Schlaf vergess'nes Glueck

Die Voegel hocken still in ihren Zweigen.
Die Welt schlaft ein!

Ich stehe hier und harre meines Freundes;
Ich harre sein zum letzten Lebewohl.

Die Schoenheit dieses Abends zu geniessen.

Ich wandle auf und nieder mit meiner Laute
Auf Wegen, die vom weichen Grase schwellen.

Er stieg vom Pferd und reichte ihm

The sun sets behind the mountains.
Into all the valleys descends the evening
With its shadows, which are full of coolness.
Oh, see! Like a silver boat floats
The moon up into the blue lake of the sky.
I feel a gentle breeze blowing
Behind the dark firs!
The brook sings full of melody
Through the darkness.
The flowers fade in the twilight.
The earth breathes full of rest and sleep,
All longing wants to dream now.
The weary people go homeward,
To learn in sleep forgotten happiness
And youth anew!
The birds sit quietly in their branches.
The world falls asleep!
Cool it blows in the shade of my firs.
I stand here and wait for the arrival of my friend;
I wait for him for the last farewell.
I long, oh friend, by your side
To enjoy the beauty of this evening.
Where do you stay? You leave me alone for a long time!
I wander up and down with my lute
On paths that swell from the soft grass.
Oh, beauty!
Oh, eternal world, drunk with love and life!
He dismounted from his horse and handed him
The farewell drink.
