Plainsman

Once, an old man in a coarse poncho came to a parrando,
With a hat made of woven palm leaves and rolled-up pants.
He seemed to be from Casanare, judging by his figure and stance,
Carrying good chimú and speaking with a slightly slurred voice.
He rode a chestnut horse, recently broken in,
The stirrups and straps were crafted from braided rawhide.
A small bottle of creolin stuck to the saddle,
And in an old bag, he carried a red rooster.
The ladies whispered secrets to each other,
About the old, love-struck plainsman dancer.
The mark of his chinstrap was visible on his cheek,
And the more the music played, the more lively he danced.
Old, with white hair and wrinkled face, my dear,
But with a voice as clear as a bell.
He had more than enough charm to win over the ladies,
Greeting people affectionately with a pat on the back.
That night, it was a pleasure to see the man enjoying the party,
Many skilled singers were left in the corner,
When he stood by the harp to sing in counterpoint.
Verse after verse, man to man, what a tough old man!
The next morning, still a bit tipsy,
He mounted his bareback horse and rode off confidently.
At the cockfighting ring, he shouted, "I'm betting on my rooster!"
He played three times and won three times with a kill.
That day, the owner of the ranch sent for a herd,
To have an impromptu rodeo with the workers.
The old man won over the crowd, hanging from one stirrup,
Wrestling the bulls along the barbed-wire fence.
During the bull riding, everyone was amazed,
Seeing the old man riding a fierce stallion.
The dust swirled around him as he jumped,
They applauded and shouted, "That's a real plainsman, brother!"
The local tough guy was used to getting his way,
He always fought at parties and had never been beaten.
That's when the saying came about, "An old dog barks lying down,"
Because he left him in a corner, asleep and bloodied.
After so many feats, with the setting sun,
He said goodbye, satisfied and with his rooster victorious.
He carried the memory of that famous party alive,
And on the back of his horse, the foreman's wife.
