I was snappin' out broncs at the Old Flyin' U
At forty a month, a plum good buckaroo

My head went to poppin', I sorta went blind
He starts in high divin', I lets out a groan
We went up together, but he come back alone

Up high, I turns over, and below I can see
He's a-pawin' up dirt just a waitin' for me
I can picture a grave and a big slab of wood
Sayin' here lies a twister who thought he was good

I notices somethin' don't seem can be true
But the brand on his hip was a Big Flyin' U
When I landed, he charged, but I got enough sense
To outrun that old bull to the hole in the fence

I dives through that hole, and I want you to know
I ain't goin' back to no big rodeo
At a -traddlin' them Brahmas, you can bet I'm all through
I'm sore footin' it back to the Old Flyin' U

Auf seinen Schultern trägt er einen Höcker,
Die Satteldecke schnall ich knapp dahinter.
Ich flüchter den Strick, und schon schrei ich los,
Er brüllt zurück – dann begann alles bloß.

Er springt nach links, und nach rechts geht's dann,
Doch ich bin nicht grün, hock fest wie ein Mann.
Der Staub steigt auf, dampft heiß aus dem Fell,
Er führt seine Hörner direkt an mich her.

Beim Sonnen des Bauches, der schlug alle Rekord,
Den Geiern zeigte er seine Fußsohlen dort.
Er taucht so tief, dass der Dreck in die Stiefel mir flockt,
Mein Hemdende peitscht dabei wie ein Stock.

Die Knöpfe von meiner Kleidung sind abgeklitscht,
Er bockt und brüllt und trompetet und schlischt.
Die Menge jauchzt ihm und mir, mir wird es zu voll,
Er braucht keine Hilfe – ich krieg's kaum noch zoll.

Dann wirft er sich schwanzschwingend schlängelnd nach hinten weit,
Mein Kopf knallt, es wird dunkel um mich her.
Er beginnt Hochsprünge – da stöhn ich nur noch.
Gemeinsam ging's hoch – doch er kam allein.

Hoch oben dreh ich mich, da unten seh ich:
Er scharrt schon den Dreck und erwartet mich.
Ich seh gradzu das Grab und ein Holzschild richtig:
"Hier ruht ein Reiter, der sich hielt für wichte."

Ich merk etwas, kaum glaubhaft, aber wahr:
Auf seiner Hüfte brannt die alte Flying U Schar.
Kaum gelandet, stürmt er, doch mir bleibt die Kraft,
Ihm durchs Loch im Zaun zuvorzukommen fürwahr.

Ich stürz durch das Loch, und damit solltest du verstehn:
Ich geh zurück nie zu dem großen Rodeo.
Was Brahmas zertrampeln betrifft, ich bin durch und leer,
Ich tramp jetzt zurück zur alten Flying U.
