Es war einmal am Opernhaus von U.
Ein braver alter Feuerwehrmann
Er blickte prüfend auf die Bühne ab und zu
Auf daß ihm ja kein schlimmer Brand entsprang

Jahrzehntelang saß er auf seinem Sitz
Zerbeult der alte Eimer unbequem
Lehnt′ müde an der Wand mit dem Schlitz zum sehen
Oft schlief er ein bei der Musik und alledem

Doch beim Ballett, da war er immer aufgeregt
Voll Anmut, fein und elegant
Hatte ihm die Ballerin' das Herz entzückt
Da wär′ beinah die Oper abgebrannt

Den Kerzenleuchter, der zu Boden fiel
Und in Flammen die Soffitte dort
Da waren Axt und Helm sogleich im Spiel

"Feuerwehrmann" sprach nun die ganze Stadt
Von seinem Auftritt und der Heldentat
Alle hatten auf der Bühne ihn gesehen
Und zum Dank küßte ihn die Ballerin'

He would look out over the stage

For decades he sat in his seat
His old bucket was dented and quite incomplete
He'd lean against the wall with the viewing slit

But during the ballet, he always was aroused
So graceful and tender
The ballerina had captured his heart
And nearly burned down the opera

"Fireman," the whole town said
About his performance and the heroic displayed
Everyone saw him on the stage
