Und es schickt sich für niemanden, auf einem bestellten Acker zu säen.
Erwäge, ob du mich vielleicht bei dir aufnehmen magst:
Mit Sicherheit bin ich ein fähiger Zeilenschreiber,
Und wenn es sich etwa ergeben sollte, dass ein Gedichtbuch ansteht,
Werde ich auch bei dieser Arbeit behilflich sein können.
Wenn du dies verwehrst, so höre, worauf du bedacht sein sollst:
Erbarme dich gütig eines Menschen, auf dem Armut lastet,

[A Petition to my Lord]
Since your manifold fame has found broad dissemination,
May all that is said of you be found true.
It is a sign of folly to re-paint a beautiful picture,
And it ill befits anyone to sow on a field already sowed.
Consider whether you might take me into your service:
Assuredly I am an able scribe of verses,
And if it should come to pass that a collection of poems is in due course,
I shall be able to assist with this task also.
Should you refuse this, then hear what you should do:
Take pity on a man weighed down by poverty,
And to alleviate my misery,
Let your beneficence flow to me in the form of a grant.
