Les marins qui meurent en mer
Et que l'on jette au gouffre amer
Comme une pierre,
Avec les chrétiens refroidis

Trouver Saint Pierre!

Ils roulent d'écueil en écueil
Dans l'épouvantable cercueil
Du sac de toile.
Mais fidèle, après le trépas,
Leur âme ne s'envole pas
Dans une étoile.

Désormais vouée aux sanglots
Par ce nouveau crime des flots
Qui tant la navre,
Entre la foudre et l'océan
Elle appelle dans le néant
Le cher cadavre.

Et nul n'a pitié de son sort
Que la mouette au large essor
Qui, d'un coup d'aile,
Contre son cœur tout frémissant,
Attire et recueille en passant
L'âme fidèle.

L'âme et l'oiseau ne font plus qu'un.
Ils cherchent le corps du défunt
Loin du rivage,
Et c'est pourquoi, sous le ciel noir,
L'oiseau jette avec désespoir
Son cri sauvage.

Ne tuez pas le goéland
Qui plane sur le flot hurlant
Ou qui l'effleure,
Car c'est l'âme d'un matelot
Qui plane au-dessus d'un tombeau
Et pleure... pleure!

The Seagulls

Sailors who die at sea
And are thrown into the bitter abyss
Like a stone,
With the cold Christians
Do not go to paradise
To find Saint Peter!

They roll from reef to reef
In the dreadful coffin
Of the canvas bag.
But faithful, after death,
Their soul does not fly away
To a star.

Now doomed to tears
By this new crime of the waves
Which so grieve her,
Between the lightning and the ocean
She calls into the void
The dear corpse.

And no one pities her fate
But the seagull with its soaring flight
Who, with a flap of its wing,
Against her trembling heart,
Attracts and gathers in passing
The faithful soul.

The soul and the bird are now one.
They seek the body of the deceased
Far from the shore,
And that is why, under the dark sky,
The bird throws its cry of despair
With desperation.

Do not kill the seagull
Who flies over the howling wave
Or who grazes it,
For it is the soul of a sailor
Who hovers over a tomb
And weeps... weeps!
