Os Jagunços lutaram

The Backlands

Marked by nature itself
The Northeast of my Brazil
Oh! Lonely backlands
Of suffering and solitude
The land is dry
It's barely possible to cultivate it
Plants die and the air escapes
Life is sad in this place

Backlander is strong
Overcomes misery without end
Backlander, strong man

In the interior of Bahia
A Man revolted with his fate
Of the world in which he lived
He hid in the backlands
Spreading rebellion
Revolting against the law
That society offered

The Jagunços fought
Until the end
Defending Canudos
In that fatal war
