I closed the door of my hotel room behind me,
It was like closing a chapter in the book of life.

On TV, Oliver North (his fifteen minutes of fame ticking steadily away)
Was being fuzzy about crucial events which had happened a year earlier
What a flake... but then who isn't?
That was Reagan's defence at least.

The worst thing is how politics begin to leak into your life.
Back in our innocence we used to simply stick two fingers up and say "fuck the Queen"
That was about all you had to say anyway,
And then go back to the more important business of making music.

So why was I sitting there feeling angry about
Covert operations and illegal aid to the Contras?
I mean I'm not even American (may be we all are a little bit).
And then I realised it was just the thought that in this particular democracy
And probably every other one in the world, there is somebody in power
Who thinks he is more right than all the people who put him there.
All the people who for once in their lives took an interest.

Outside, the wind was howling the "who who's" from "Sympathy For The Devil"
Round and round the concrete hotel walls and corners.
That was then, this is...!

puis a créé le diable pour lui imputer ses erreurs.

J'ai fermé la porte de ma chambre d'hôtel derrière moi, ma chérie,
c'était comme clore un chapitre du livre de la vie.
Dehors, trente étages plus bas, j'entendais la police,
utiliser leurs sirènes comme des sifflements pour draguer les jeunes filles.

À la télévision, Oliver North (ses quinze minutes de gloire s'égrainaient inexorablement)
était évasif sur des événements cruciaux qui s'étaient produits un an auparavant.
Quel imposteur... mais qui ne l'est pas ?
C'était la défense de Reagan, du moins.

Le pire, c'est la façon dont la politique commence à s'infiltrer dans ta vie, ma belle.
Dans notre innocence passée, on se contentait de lever deux doigts et de dire « va te faire, la Reine ».
C'était à peu près tout ce qu'on avait à dire de toute façon,
et puis on retournait à l'activité plus importante de faire de la musique.

Alors pourquoi étais-je assis là, en colère à propos
d'opérations secrètes et d'aide illégale aux Contras ?
Je veux dire, je ne suis même pas américain (peut-être que nous le sommes tous un peu).
Et puis j'ai réalisé que c'était juste l'idée que dans cette démocratie particulière,
et probablement dans toutes les autres du monde, il y a quelqu'un au pouvoir
qui pense avoir plus raison que tous ceux qui l'y ont mis.
Tous ceux qui, pour une fois dans leur vie, se sont intéressés.

Dehors, le vent hurlait les « ouh ouh » de « Sympathy For The Devil »
autour des murs et des coins en béton de l'hôtel.
C'était avant, maintenant c'est... !
