When the spring sings its songs to the darkness
I should have run to every door that opened, thinking it was you

When the night spreads its stars over the sky
I should have fallen asleep to see you
Footsteps should have come from afar
And I would have always thought they were yours

No matter to whom songs are sung
I should have listened as if they were for you
My room should have been filled with folk songs
A voice saying, "I parted from a cypress-like beloved,"
And the cypress-like beloved should have been you
The words, "I fell into the fire of your coal-colored eyes,"
Should have been said for you
But no one should have known this
I should have hidden you until the Day of Resurrection
I shouldn't have been like this
When words carried the Taif to my ears
Before the wind of Taif even struck my face
Stones should have scarred my face
When Uhud was mentioned, my teeth should have ached

At a vesper time in the harem
When envious eyes turned to you,
And disloyal hands reached for your collar,
My heart should have tightened, and my breath should have stopped

When you prepared to depart
And the hereafter adorned itself for you
Imagining you at the window where you looked out for the last time
Like the curtain closing for the last time
My eyes should have closed

Then, turning inward
And crying out the name of the one who blessed us with you
Saying, "Allah,"
I should have fallen to the ground
But no one should have known this
I would have hidden you until the Day of Resurrection

And on the Day of Resurrection,
I will watch you from afar
Longing to be close to you
But I will be held back
And you will ask, "Who is this closeness to me?"
I will be unable to speak for weeping
You will turn your eyes to me
My heaven is your eyes looking upon me
And you will smile
But no one will see this
I will hide you for eternity
