Day of wrath, that day
Will dissolve the world in ashes,
As testified by David and the Sibyl.
What fear will there be
When the judge comes
To examine all things strictly.
The trumpet, spreading its wondrous sound
Throughout the sepulchers of the regions
Will summon all before the throne.
Death will tremble and nature
When the creature arises
To answer the Judge.
The written book will be brought forth
In which everything is contained,
From which the world will be judged.
Therefore, when the Judge shall sit
Whatever is hidden shall be revealed,
Nothing shall remain unpunished.
What shall I, wretched one, then say,
What patron shall I entreat,
When the just man is scarcely secure?
King of tremendous majesty,
Who savest the saved freely,
Save me, O fount of piety.
Remember, O gentle Jesus,
That I am the cause of Thy way,
Lose me not on that day.
Seeking me, Thou didst sit weary,
Thou didst redeem me, suffering on the cross;
Let not such toil be in vain.
Just Judge of vengeance
Grant the gift of forgiveness
Before the day of reckoning.
I groan like one guilty,
My face blushes with guilt,
Spare me, O God, as I plead.
Thou who didst absolve Mary
And didst hear the thief,
Thou hast given me hope.
My prayers are not worthy,
But do Thou, in Thy goodness, grant
That I may not burn in eternal fire.
Set me among Thy sheep,
And separate me from the goats,
Placing me at Thy right hand.
When the cursed are confounded
And condemned to fierce flames,
Call me with the blessed.
I pray, suppliant and bowed down,
My heart contrite as ashes,
Take care of my end.
That tearful day
When from ashes man shall rise
To be judged as guilty.
