A Mighty Fortress

A mighty fortress is our God, a trusty shield and weapon.
His power protects his beloved, his church throughout all ages.
With might and with great fury,
the devil assaults us, with craftiness and with rage,
with wicked guile and strong deceit, none on earth can match his fury.
Our strength is naught, we soon must yield, and perish in our weakness.
But for us fights the mighty One, with God himself as our fortress.
Defend us, Christ, victorious Lord, who won the battle on our behalf.
Lord of all heaven, God of might, who vanquished Satan in his fury.
Our word must stand, though earth shall end,
for we are sure his promise will endure,
and he will keep us steadfast here with open face to meet the foe.
Though we may lose our friends and goods, or life itself, he gives us grace.
