Scylla and Charybdis

Whoever claims all children are inherently good,
Cites the rule, ignoring exceptions as they should.
On this matter, I can confidently state,
Let anyone who disagrees step up and debate.
I'm not a fearful person by design,
Yet even of my own daughters, I am frightened, it's true, mine.

I might be an aging father, I confess,
But my sense of honor hasn't grown any less.

My weapons behind. If you wish, use yours with might,
But be warned, dear, the monsters you face are two, not one, in this fight.

Scylla and Charybdis, names I've heard before,
Whispered behind me in school, a teacher's exasperated lore.
Scylla and Charybdis, nature's dreadful pair,
The terror of the postman, the priest, and the doctor, I swear.

Scylla and Charybdis, from Messina's narrow strait,
Know how to swim all the way home, each morning I see their fate.
My shame is such that I only venture out in disguise,
With Scylla and Charybdis, on carnival days, beneath painted skies.

Among the nymphs, Scylla was the fairest, it's told,
And Glaucus, desiring her, his feelings bold,
Found his affections not returned with the same fire's spark,
So the prince sought a love potion, a magic to embark.
But Circe, the cunning and envious sorceress,
Transformed the nymph into a monster, not a bride, to possess.

Charybdis, with her terrible and endless craving,
Consumed a meal that Zeus found quite depraving.
He cast a thunderbolt into the bronze-hued sea,
Transforming the monstrous hunger into a swirling decree.
With the monster Scylla, you shall forever be,
Terror and death for sailors, eternally.

Scylla and Charybdis, I've heard them whisper low,
Dragging themselves at night, beneath my bed, to and fro.
Scylla and Charybdis sent me to the hospital bed,
Slamming my hand in the drawer, leaving me injured and misled.

Scylla and Charybdis, monstrosities of the sea,
Embodied, it seems, within my little girls, you see.
Their fright is such that I'd take them to the ocean's vast shore,
And leave them to drift away, far out to sea, forevermore.

Scylla and Charybdis, despised by gods and men,
Go to bed past midnight, awake by six again.
Scylla and Charybdis can count up to three,
Millions, and each day they count with me.

Scylla and Charybdis, with hearts of a predator's kind,
Hide in the closet, I know by the scent they leave behind.
Their repulsiveness is such that I'd take them to the pool,
Back home, in the Messina Strait, where waters are cool.
