(Parlato) Landolfo, cronista del Millecento, ci ha tramandato uno dei fatti più importanti della storia del Comune di Milano. La cronaca del giudizio di Dio, protagonista prete Liprando.
Abbiamo cercato di musicarla con un certo impegno, e la dedichiamo a tutti quelli, e sono tanti, che pur essendo testimoni a fatti importantissimi e determinanti dell'evoluzione della civiltà, neanche se ne accorgono!

Prete Liprando, ben visto dai poveri Cristi,
Andò dall'arcivescovo Gresolano, in Sant'Ambrogio:
"Sei ladro e simoniaco, - gli disse -
Venduto all'Imperatore, quel porco." "Cus'èee?!?
- Disse l'Arcivescovo infuriato -
Come ti permetti, prete? Sono ex-combattente;
Ho fatto la prima crociata, e anche la terza!
(...la seconda no, perché ero malato...)
Prete Liprando rispose: "Lo so, più d'una città hai saccheggiata;
Lo so, più d'una città tu hai insanguinata;
Ed ora, Milano tu vuoi, inchiodata, vederla prostrata!"

"Liprando, a 'sto punto esigo il Giudizio di Dio:
Dovrai camminare sui carboni (s'intende, ardenti!);
Le fascine di legna, (quaranta?), quaranta
S'intende, le pago io.
Se tu ne uscirai per niente arrostito,
Io me ne andrò solo e umiliato, con velocità,
Solo e appiedato!

"Prete Liprando, domani, allo calar del sole
Affronterà il Giudizio di Dio in Piazza Sant'Ambrogio!"
Quaranta fascine furono approntate in una catasta;
La gente veniva fin da Venegoro e da Biandrate:
"Indietro, su, non spingete, per Diana!
C'è il fuoco, non lo vedete?" "Ma io non vedo niente;
Non vedo un'accidente! Son venuto da Como per niente!"

"Tornate tutti a casa! Non se ne fa più niente!
Il Papa, da Roma ha proibito: lo spettacolo è finito!"
"E io lo faccio lo stesso! - disse il prete Liprando -
Ma le fascine, quaranta! io non ce le ho!..."

La gente portava le fascine fin da Biandrate;
Facevano un sacco di fumo: la gente tossiva,
Tossiva e piangeva, ma non si muoveva!
Che popolo pio! Voleva vedere il Giudizio di Dio!

"Ecco lo vedi là!... Liprando è già pronto..." "Dove è?"
"E' là in fondo... È bianco, ha paura!... Col che è magro...
Ha i piedi spogliati!... Che piedi lunghi!..."

La brace è rossa, e rosse son tutte le facce...
Stan tutti con gli occhi sbarrati...
"Anch'io li ho sbarrati, però non vedo niente!"

È entrato dentro ai carboni senza guardare:
In mezzo è tutto sudato, ma non è bruciato...
Due donne son svenute! Una ha partorito,
Ma in buona salute...

"Dai, non spingete!" "...ma io non vedo niente!"
"Ecco, è arrivato; Dio l'ha salvato!"
"Gloria a Liprando, che Milano ha salvato!"
"L'arcivescovo è scappato" ("Gloria a Liprando!")
"L'avete veduto!" ("Gloria a Liprando!")
"Io non ho visto niente" ("Gloria a Liprando!")
"Il cavallo s'è impennato!..." ("Gloria a Liprando!")

Priest Liprando

(Spoken) Landolfo, a chronicler of the 12th century, has passed down to us one of the most important events in the history of the Municipality of Milan: the chronicle of the Judgment of God, starring Priest Liprando.
We have tried to set it to music with some effort, and we dedicate it to all those, and there are many, who, despite being witnesses to very important and decisive events in the evolution of civilization, don't even notice!

Priest Liprando, well regarded by the poor Christians,
Went to the archbishop Gresolano, in Sant'Ambrogio:
"You are a thief and a simoniac," he told him,

- Said the Archbishop enraged -
How dare you, priest? I am a veteran;

Priest Liprando replied: "I know, you have sacked more than one city;

And now, you want to see Milan nailed down, prostrate!"

"Liprando, at this point I demand the Judgment of God:
You will have to walk on coals (burning, of course!);
The bundles of wood, (forty?), forty

Forty bundles were prepared in a pile;

People were bringing bundles from as far as Biandrate;
They were making a lot of smoke: people were coughing,
Coughing and crying, but they wouldn't move!
What a pious people! They wanted to see the Judgment of God!

"There you see him!... Liprando is ready..." "Where is he?"
"He's back there... He's white, he's scared!... And he's skinny...
He has bare feet!... What long feet!..."

The embers are red, and all the faces are red...
They are all standing there with their eyes wide open...
"I have mine wide open too, but I can't see anything!"

He walked into the coals without looking:
